NFL Rumors: Derek Carr trade talks set to pick up pace with key event approaching

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is one of two veteran quarterbacks on the trade market and is widely expected to find a new franchise this offseason.

What started as rumors were all but confirmed on January 12, by NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport in a tweet.

"Sources: The #Raiders will begin the process of evaluating the trade market for QB Derek Carr, as they prepare for a decision on their QB for the future. This points to the possibility of Carr, who holds a no-trade clause and will be part of the process, leaving the organization."

Since then, there's been little movement on the subject. However, uStadium reported this morning that although nothing has materialized yet, things could heat up this week. Many general managers and owners from around the NFL will be in Mobile, Alabama for the 2023 Senior Bowl.

The Derek Carr trade market “hasn’t really materialized outside of conceptual conversations” but that could change this week in Mobile. #Raiders GM Dave Ziegler will be one of many GM’s in attendance (SI.com).

The rumors have the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, and Carolina Panthers all heavily interested in Derek Carr. There is also a chance that the Washington Commanders and Indianapolis Colts are too.

Green Bay Packers veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers is also reportedly available on the trade market. He is expected to receive more interest than Carr, although the Packers said they would only trade him to an AFC team.

Both quarterbacks will headline the offseason news, and many teams who are in need of a quarterback will be interested in both.

Derek Carr will be entering his 10th NFL season next year after spending his first nine campaigns with the Raiders. He was selected in the second-round of the 2014 NFL draft out of Fresno State and became one of the Raiders' best quarterbacks ever.

He set many franchise records as a rookie, including:

  • Most games started (16)
  • Most completions (348)
  • Most pass attempts (599)
  • Pass completion percentage (58.1%)
  • Most passing yards (3,270)
  • Most passing touchdowns (21)
  • Lowest interception percentage (2.0%)
  • Highest passer rating (76.6)

As for franchise records, Derek Carr boasts the following:

  • Touchdown passes (217)
  • Pass completions (3,201)
  • Pass attempts (4,958)
  • Pass completion percentage (64.6%)
  • Passing yards (35,222)
  • Lowest interception percentage (2.0%)
  • Highest passer rating (91.8)
  • Most fourth-quarter comebacks (28)
  • Most game-winning drives (33)

Looking at these records, it becomes obvious why so many franchises are interested in Carr. While he may not have the starpower of Aaron Rodgers, Carr is a very dependable QB and well worth taking a chance on.

For teams unable to source a star QB in the draft due to their position, Derek Carr could be good value for money. With Carr benefiting from a no-trade clause, he has some control over his destination. We will see where that is in the coming weeks or months.
