NFL Rumors: Houston Texans forming Jimmy Garoppolo plan as QB carousel goes round
Could the Houston Texans land quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in free agency? The Texans are one of many teams who will enter the 2023-2024 season with a new quarterback under center.
With over $40 million in cap space and the number two overall pick in this year's draft, the Texans are in prime position to acquire a new quarterback or two.
According to CBS Reporter Jonathan Jones, the team is pushing to sign Garoppolo.
Garoppolo is set to become one of the best free agent quarterbacks after Derek Carr was signed by the Saints on Monday. The Texans also hired Bobby Slowik as their new offensive coordinator and he spent time with Garoppolo in San Fran.
If they are able to land Garoppolo, their plan would be to still draft a quarterback at number two. They would start Garoppolo and let the young quarterback sit behind him and develop.
With the second overall pick, they'd be able to draft a top QB prospect. The Chicago Bears currently hold the number one overall pick and unless they trade it away, it's almost a guarantee that a QB won't be taken number one overall.
Garoppolo went 7-3 as a starting quarterback last year with San Francisco. He was signed last year on a one-year deal to be the team's backup, but Trey Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 that allowed Garoppolop to take over as the starter.
His season was cut short when he suffered a Lisfranc injury that ended his season prematurely. He threw for 16 touchdowns, four interceptions, 2,437 yards and posted a passer rating of 103.
Houston Texans struggled at quarterback last season with Davis Mills and Kyle Allen
Last season, the Houston Texans finished 3-13-1, which awarded them the second overall pick in the draft.
They suffered bad quarterback play from Davis Mills and Kyle Allen. Mills was named the starter heading into the season and finished the season 3-11-1. He has a passer rating of 78.8 and was benched for in Week 12 for Kyle Allen.
Allen filled in for two games and went 0-2 completing just 59 per cent of passes and throwing two touchdowns and four interceptions.
The Texans will move on from both of these guys as their starters and will either sign a veteran like Garoppolo or draft a young guy at number two, or decide to do both.
