NFL Rumors: Jimmy Garoppolo viewed as "costly" third option for teams aiming new QB
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and his playing future has been a hot topic ever since the franchise drafted Trey Lance. With Brock Purdy now emerging as a contender for the starter position, many wonder where that leaves Garoppolo.
In short, his future seems destined to be away from the 49ers, and with a host of teams needing a quarterback, Garopplo's list of suitors will likely be quite long...except maybe it won't be.
Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the 49ers quarterback wants a contract that reflects his ability and skill-set. Keep in mind that he has led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance as well as multiple NFC Championship appearances.
Fowler said:
"He wants a contract that measure with his skill-set and ability."
So the brings us to what kind of money the quarterback will be chasing. Given how he is seen across the league, we can imagine that there will be a ceiling on what teams will offer.
He likely won't get Aaron Rodgers-type money, but maybe in the ballpark of Derek Carr, as some view him as better than the former Las Vegas Raiders star.
Carr's average salary per spotrac.com is $40.5 million. Could Jimmy G get that? without a doubt, but the question remains if there is a team that thinks he is worth such a price tag.
Where could Garoppolo land in 2023?
Firstly, which teams need a quarterback? At the time of writing, the Las Vegas Raiders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons and the Houston Texans could all do with Jimmy G.
The Texans are likely to pick a quarterback in the NFL Draft but the Buccaneers and Raiders present two good choices, as do the Jets, if they don't pursue Aaron Rodgers.
The biggest question, however, is what teams think Jimmy G is worth. If he is seeking Derek Carr-type money and no team thinks he is worth it, then he is stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Either way, there will be a team that will put in an offer for Garoppolo and at this stage of his career, he can't really afford to be choosey.
