NFL Rumors: Seahawks looking to tie down Geno Smith to long-term bumper contract
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith is having one of the most surprising seasons of all-time in his 10th NFL season.
The former first-round quarterback is having a career season as he's set career-highs in completions, completion percentage, passing yards, passing touchdowns, and quarterback rating thus far.
According to multiple NFL analysts, such as Dov Kleiman and Jordan Schultz, the Seahawks reportedly want to sign Smith to a long-term deal following his impressive 2022 campaign.
Schultz made an appearance on the "Pat McAfee Show" and reported that the Seahawks staff and players love him and want to extend him.
Schultz tweeted:
"The #Seahawks staff loves Geno Smith. The players love him. He’s played himself into a massive contract. Seattle would certainly prefer to extend him, but I’ve also spoken w/other teams who feel he’s worth a significant multi-year deal. Either way, Geno is getting paid."
Before the season started, Smith signed a one-year deal worth $3.5 million with the Seahawks. He spent the previous three seasons with the team but mainly as a back up for Russell Wilson.
After the Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in a blockbuster trade, there was open competition between Smith and newly acquired quarterback Drew Lock.
Lock entered the season on the COVID list, which helped Smith earn the starting job, and Smith took advantage of the opportunity.
Geno Smith is having a career year with the Seattle Seahawks
Some are late bloomers, and Smith is one of them.
He is having by far his best season as a pro in his 10th season with the Seahawks this year. Smith leads the league in completion percentage (72.7) while also having a passer rating of 108.7.
He has also thrown for 3,169 yards, 22 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. He's added 236 yards on the ground and a touchdown.
Smith was taken in the first round of the 2013 draft by the New York Jets and went 12-18 with the team in four seasons. He spent the next two seasons with the New York Giants and San Diego Chargers as a backup before joining Seattle in 2019.
