“The dumbest play I’ve ever seen” – Shannon Sharpe puts Patriots on blast after Jakobi Meyers’ humiliating lateral in loss vs Raiders
New England Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers cost the Patriots their game yesterday vs. the Las Vegas Raiders.
With the game tied 24-24 as time expired, the Patriots tried to pull off a miracle and win the game on a miracle play involving a lot of laterals.
Once Meyers got the ball, he panicked and threw the ball back 20 yards into Raiders linebacker Chandler Jones' hands, who took the fumble recovery for a touchdown, winning the game for the Raiders.
On Undisputed, analysts Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe discussed the play, with Sharpe dubbing it as the dumbest play he's ever seen.
Sharpe said:
"That's the dumbest play I've ever seen. Jakobi Meyers said the instructions in the huddle were straight-forward, just run the ball, and go down. Okay, first of all, Rhamondre Stevenson, he goes rogue, because he didn't get the ball just to go down. He said you know what, they expecting me to go down, let me get some cheap rush yards. He's already broken through the call. Now, how about you got your 34-yards, padded your stats, just go down."
"Nope, nope, nope, let me try something. Let me pitch it back to Jakobi Meyers. To make matters worse, Jakobi Meyers, you said in the huddle just run the ball, go down. Once he throws the ball to me, guess what I'm gone, do, Skip? I'm going down. Cause only thing after that is something bad. To lose a game in this fashion, I don't know what Jakobi Meyers was thinking Skip. You're in a tied ball game, you're going to overtime. They were playing like they were behind seven, trying to make something happen."
Jakobi Meyers' comments on his lateral that cost the New England Patriots the game
Following the loss, Meyers spoke to the media and described his perspective on the game.
Meyers claims he didn't see Chandler Jones and says he should have gone down.
Meyers said:
"I thought I saw Mac open. I didn't see Chandler Jones at the time. I just thought he was open and tried to get it to him and let him try to make a play with it. But the score was tied, so I should have just went down."
"It's not even about Rhamondre. Once he gives it to me, I'm smart enough to know it's tied and go down with it. Whether he gave the ball to me or not, he gave it to me because he trusted me. I got to be smarter with it."
The loss drops the Patriots to 7-7 and out of contention for a playoff spot. They are tied for last place in the AFC East with the New York Jets.
