Stephen A. Smith believes Tom Brady's legacy as NFL GOAT at risk
With Monday night's victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has secured the second Super Bowl victory of his six-year career.
Mahomes has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL since taking over as the Chiefs starter in 2018. Since he's had such a successful career at such a young age, some think he has the potential to catch up to Tom Brady's haul of Super Bowl trophies.
ESPN First Take host Stephen A. Smith was asked if he thinks Mahomes can match Tom Brady's status, to which Smith said:
"I think he can. I think he can because I think when you see the importance of the quarterback position, how dynamic and material he is, as Ryan highlighted, you can't prepare for him... He has shown that there's very little he can't do as a quarterback."
Smith stated that the Chiefs will have Travis Kelce and Andy Reid for the foreseeable future to continue wreaking havoc with Mahomes.
He added:
"Andy Reid announced he's coming back after the game. 'I'm coming back.' He's not retiring. Andy Reid is going to still be there. The ownership led by the Hunts are in place. You have stability in your front office, you have stability with your coaching. And obviously you have Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, who ain't about to go anywhere for the foreseeable future.
"And they've got a lot of young guns, one could easily argue they're in a better situation than Philadelphia... So I look at it from that perspective. And I say, yeah, he could pull it off."
Comparing Patrick Mahomes' career to Tom Brady's
While Mahomes has secured his second Super Bowl victory, he's not quite up to Brady's standards as yet.
Brady has a record of seven Super Bowl victories. No other team has more than six. He also has five Super Bowl MVPs, three league MVPs, and 15 Pro Bowl selections. He also holds the record for most passing yards, touchdowns, and wins for a quarterback.
Mahomes is a two-time Super bowl champion, two-time Super Bowl MVP, and two-time league MVP. He has five Pro Bowls and three All-Pro awards.
It will take more time for Mahomes to catch up to Brady, but if there's a QB that has a chance to do so, it's Mahomes.
