Super Bowl XLVII: The Har-Bowl
Super Bowl XLVII was played on February 3, 2013, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Baltimore Ravens, champions of the AFC, faced off against the San Francisco 49ers, champions of the NFC.
The game was coached by brothers John Harbaugh and Jim Harbaugh, and is referred to as "The Har-Bow.l" It also has another nickname, "The Blackout Bowl," after the Superdome had a power failure, leading to a 34-minute suspension in play.
The Ravens had a solid regular season, finishing with a record of 10-6. They won their division and then defeated the Indianapolis Colts, the Denver Broncos, and the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game to advance to the Super Bowl. Quarterback Joe Flacco led the offense, completing 317 passes for 3,817 yards and 22 touchdowns, and his playoff games were regarded as among the best QB postseason runs in history. The defense was led by linebacker Ray Lewis and safety Ed Reed, who recorded 4 interceptions that season and was coached by defensive coordinator Dean Pees.
The 49ers also had a successful regular season, finishing with a record of 11-4-1. They won their division and then defeated the Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship Game to advance to Super Bowl XLVII. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick took over as the 49ers starter after an injury to Alex Smith, completing 243 passes for 1,814 yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 415 yards and 5 touchdowns. The defense was stellar and the strongest aspect of the team, led by pass rusher Aldon Smith, who recorded 19.5 sacks that season. Smith and all 3 other starting linebackers were named to the season's All-Pro team.
Super Bowl XLVII
Super Bowl XLVII saw the Baltimore Ravens emerge victorious over the San Francisco 49ers, securing their second Super Bowl win in franchise history. The game was dominated by the Ravens in the first half, led by quarterback Joe Flacco's three touchdown passes, which gave them a 21-3 lead. However, their lead was cut to 21-6 just before halftime. The Ravens immediately picked up their scoring after Jacoby Jones returned a second-half kickoff for a record 108 yards, giving them a 28-6 lead. However, a partial power outage in the Superdome following the return suspended play for 34 minutes. After the play resumed, the 49ers began to rally, scoring 17 unanswered third-quarter points to cut the Ravens' lead to 28-23. The 49ers continued to close in on the lead in the fourth quarter. With the Ravens leading late in the game, 34-29, the 49ers drove down to the Baltimore 7-yard line just before the two-minute warning but turned the ball over on downs due to a controversial no-call on fourth down. To preserve the victory, the Ravens took an intentional safety in the waning moments of the game
Joe Flacco, who threw for 287 yards and 3 touchdowns, was named Super Bowl XLVII MVP after his outstanding performance. The win marked the Ravens' second Super Bowl victory in franchise history.
