"Take care of my baby" - When Chiefs star Jovan Belcher took his own life after murdering girlfriend

Some incidents aren't forgotten easily. In 2012, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher ended his life with a bone-chilling shot to the temple. The tragedy came after the NFL player shot and murdered his girlfriend in front of their three-month-old baby.

Belcher shot his girlfriend, drove to Arrowhead Stadium, and proceeded to commit suicide in front of his GM and coach.

"Take care of my baby," Belcher said before he shot himself.

Reports added that he even thanked them before ending his life.

In a statement, Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt expressed his grief, letting everyone know that their hearts were heavy with sympathy. They reached out to Belcher's family and friends, sending out their thoughts and prayers.

"We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted," Hunt said.

He continued:

"We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities and work to ensure that the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members of the organization."

Police revealed that his mother referred to the victim, Kasandra M. Perkins, as her daughter, which caused some initial confusion.

Were Jovan Belcher's friends expecting such a violent act?

Belcher's agent, Joe Linta, explained his side, adding that Belcher was the last person who they thought would do this:

"Completely out of character for the guy I know. I didn't have a lot of individual contact with him but this is so out of character for him. Completely out of character. He was charitable, polite, articulate -- and something went crazy wrong."

Even their family friend referred to Jovan Belcher as a good man, who was great to be around, saying:

"You couldn't be around a better person."

What did Jovan Belcher say before he shot himself?

Belcher's last words were revealed by the Kansas City police some time after his suicide. The couple had been arguing for a while, including over the custody of their daughter Zoey.

He reportedly began dating another woman months before the shooting.

Their GM, Scott Pioli, revealed what Belcher said while holding the gun to his head.

"You know that I've been having some major problems at home and with my girlfriend. I need help! I wasn't able to get enough help. I appreciate everything you all have done for me with trying to help … but it wasn't enough. I have hurt my girl already and I can't go back now."

A successful athlete, Belcher had a lot to give before his unexpected and untimely demise.
