Throwback to the last 5 NFL Super Bowls
It's that time of the year again. The NFL season is almost over, and the Super Bowl is just around the corner.
The Kansas City Chiefs are set to face the Philadelphia Eagles at State Farm Stadium, the Arizona Cardinals' home field, on Feb. 12.
In the AFC championship game, Kansas City defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 on a a field goal with under five seconds left. On the other hand, the Eagles became NFC champions when they routed the San Francisco 49ers 31-7.
This is the perfect opportunity to look back on some of the greatest moments from the past five Super Bowls.
1. Super Bowl LII (2018)
This game saw the Eagles top the New England Patriots 41-33 in a thrilling game. After leading almost the entire game, the Eagles gave up the lead early in the fourth quarter, trailing 33-32, before back-to-back scores led to victory.
Quarterback Nick Foles had a standout performance, earning the MVP award. His teammates, Corey Clement and Nelson Agholor, were also impressive.
One of the highlights was the "Philly Special" trick play executed on a crucial fourth down in the second quarter.
2. Super Bowl LIII (2019)
The Patriots secured back-to-back appearances in the final game to take on the Los Angeles Rams. In contrast to Super Bowl LII, the 53rd NFL championship match was a low-scoring affair. In fact, early in the last quarter, the score was tied at 3-3.
Eventually, though, New England broke the deadlock with a touchdown followed by a field goal to win 13-3. Quarterback Tom Brady won his sixth Super Bowl ring.
This game broke records for being the lowest-scoring Super Bowl game in history, with the two teams scoring a combined total of 16 points.
3. Super Bowl LIV (2020)
This was a highly anticipated NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Chiefs. It was the first time Chiefs' rising superstar Patrick Mahomes reached the Super Bowl. The 49ers also had a lot of talent in this matchup, with Jimmy Garoppolo under center and Raheem Mostert and Deboo Samuels part of the offense.
The game started off balanced. At halftime, the score was tied at 10 points each. Mahomes threw two interceptions in the third quarter, and San Francisco scored 10 points from the turnovers to take a massive lead.
But Kansas City scored 21 points in the last quarter, thanks to two turnovers by the 49ers. The Chiefs came out on top 31-20 as Patrick Mahomes earned the MVP award.
This game was special because it marked the second NFL championship win in Chiefs history. The first one came exactly 50 years earlier, in Super Bowl IV.
4. Super Bowl LV (2021)
Super Bowl LV was a historic game, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers taking on the Chiefs.
The game marked the first season Brady didn't play for the Patriots. Still, in his first year with the Buccaneers, he took them to the most important game of the season.
Tampa Bay dominated, keeping the Chiefs from scoring a single touchdown, in a 31-9 victory. Their defense was locked in. Brady earned his seventh ring, making him the only player to have more Super Bowl rings than any NFL team.
This victory marked the first time that a team won a Super Bowl in its home stadium.
5. Super Bowl LVI (2022)
The most recent Super Bowl was between the Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals. The Rams had a stacked roster after going all in on the season with multiple midseason acquisitions.
The teams were evenly matched, and going into the fourth quarter, the Bengals led by four points. After both sides punted a few times, the Rams got the ball back with five minutes left. They drove the ball 79 yards with 15 plays in less than four minutes to score a touchdown and grab the lead.
The Bengals tried to tie it up with a field goal, but after a controversial pass attempt on fourth-and-1 that was incomplete, the Rams prevailed 23-20.
This was the first time the Rams won the Super Bowl since moving from St. Louis to Los Angeles.
