Tom Brady was once called out for "fake news" after sharing wellness tips
Tom Brady was the best on the field in the NFL. Since he left the league, the 'GOAT' has focused mostly on his kids and his business ventures, especially his TB12 program. The program has always been a part of Brady’s retirement plan, which has been widely accepted by multiple athletes. It consists of tips and techniques Brady has learned and successfully applied in his life.
The book, released in 2017, gives fans an insight into Brady’s strict lifestyle, among which is the importance of staying hydrated.
“I always hydrate afterward, too, to keep my skin from peeling.”
However, the same tip was later busted by an American dermatologist. Even Sports Illustrated called the tip 'absurd'.
The American Academy of Dermatology states that melanin, a protein produced by skin cells, is the pivotal reason behind sunburns. Fair-skinned people like Tom Brady have less melanin than dark-skinned people. Hence, they tend to burn more easily.
The melanin builds over time through daily exposure to sunlight and people tend to develop a base tan that helps cope with sunburns. Since Brady played an outdoor sport for too long, he may have developed resistance to sunburn. However, Brady feels otherwise.
"When I was growing up, and playing outside in the sun, I got sunburned a lot. I was a fair-skinned Irish boy, after all. These days, even if I get an adequate amount of sun, I won't get a sunburn, which I credit to the amount of water I drink." (Via Sports Illustrated).
Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Sourab Choudhary outrightly rejected Brady’s claims while calling it "fake news", as reported by NBC News.
“The only thing that prevents sunburn is minimizing time spent in the sun during peak hours (10 am-2 pm), wearing sun protective clothing, and sunscreen.”
While Brady is a great authority on many issues related to fitness and health, it seems his advice on how to prevent sunburn may not be that perfect.
Tom Brady receives advice from sister for his TB12 program
Brady gets a lot of attention for his fitness, charming looks, and even his clear skin, so much so that he is even rumored to have had plastic surgeries on his face. Although Brady has never responded to such rumors, he takes pride in his facial skin.
The seven-time Super Bowl-winner also receives inputs from his sister. He once narrated how his sister was surprised to hear his skincare routine.
"When I once told that to my sister, she said, 'You mean I don’t have to use all those moisturizers and facial products to keep my skin looking good? I should just drink as much water as you do?' ... I just laughed." (Via Sports Illustrated).
Brady then claimed that it was her idea to market TB12 electrolytes as a beauty product. So, Brady eventually mentioned a rundown in his book of all the types of liquids he consumes while recommending avoiding carbonated water.
