Tom Brady credits Bill Belichick for helping him develop a key trait common in franchise QBs

There is an ever-raging debate in the NFL about whether Tom Brady or Bill Belichick was more responsible for the New England Patriots dynasty. While that debate won't go away, the legendary quarterback offered a bit of insight into how the two helped each other. In particular, how Belichick helped him do something that franchise quarterbacks do.

He discussed this on the Let's Go! podcast. Understanding the intricate details and the moves and countermoves that happen within a single play is a key trait for franchise quarterbacks to exhibit. Here's what Brady said on the subject:

"And there's a very standard for perfection, that I want to see the game play that because I value the sport, I value the coordination of this incredible chess match has happened in the play within every play."

He continued:

"I just feel like there's probably more Johnny Miller in me, where, you know, when I used to watch him on golf telecasts, it, you know, he would view was just scaping sometimes what that guy choked under pressure, whatever."

He continued, adding that that has framed how he sees the game and that his former coach helped him in that regard:

"And that's essentially how I ended up seeing the game a lot now. So not that I want to be negative but I do want to point out and Belichick taught this to me a lot, you know, is you know, you and I said this to Jim, you know, it's hard to win a game in the NFL, there's more games lost in the NFL than they're won. If you don't screw it up, you got a great chance to win because most people do just mess it up."

It may be true that Brady was always destined for greatness, but even he believes that Belichick tremendously helped him get there.

Is Tom Brady retiring after this season?

A return to the NFL has not been as fruitful as Brady would have hoped after briefly retiring. Some players would take that as a sign and call it a career officially.

However, many around the league believe Tom Brady has made up his mind and that he will be playing next season. According to them, he doesn't talk or act like a player who's calling it quits in a few months.

He very well could, but a return seems more likely at this point. Much depends on how the Tampa Bay Buccaneers perform in the final third of the 2022 NFL season. Top of the NFC South with a 5-5 record, there is a very good chance that Tom Brady is going to the playoffs.

Once there, we all know what could happen. If Tom Brady gets the chance to retire after an eighth Super Bowl win, there is a good chance that he will take it. Retiring at the very pinacle of achievement is not available to many, and it could be what he had planned all along.
