Tom Brady's dad once dropped harsh take about QB's time with Patriots: "It will end badly"
Quarterback Tom Brady's dad, Tom Brady Sr. once predicted what would happen at the end of his tenure with the New England Patriots. In 2015, Brady Sr. sat down with NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal and told him that he saw his son playing for years to come, but that it wouldn't happen with the Patriots.
The older Brady even went as far as to say the quarterback's tenure with the team would 'end badly' and pointed at the decision to draft backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo as one of the reasons. He thought the organization didn't believe his son would play into his 40s and was preparing for his replacement.
"It will end badly," he said. "It does end badly and I know that because I know what Tommy wants to do. He wants to play till he's 70." He noted the drafting of Garoppolo and said the Patriots smartly didn't want to be "caught with their pants down," as the Colts were when Peyton Manning was injured a few years ago. "It's a cold business," the senior Brady said. "And for as much as you want it to be familial, it isn't," Thomas Brady Sr. told NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal.
Five years after Brady Sr.'s comments, the quarterback would decide to depart the New England Patriots after the 2019 NFL season. He then signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won a Super Bowl title in his first season with the team.
Tom Brady issues an apology after father's comments about Bill Belichick
In 2021, Tom Brady Sr. made another comment about his son's tenure with the Patriots despite his son playing for the Buccaneers at the time. The older Brady appeared on the "Tom Curran's Patriots Talk Podcast" and accused head coach Bill Belichick of being the reason his son left New England.
"Belichick wanted him out the door and last year he threw 56 touchdowns. I think that's a pretty good year," Brady Sr. said on the "Tom Curran's Patriots Talk Podcast".
Tom Brady then responded to his father's comments on an episode of his "Let's Go" podcast on September 29, 2021. He seemingly joked that his father's comments and opinions didn't reflect how he felt. He also joked that he would put his father in a 'home' if he made further comments.
"I've actually prepared a statement that I wanted to say, and it's really all that I have to say on the subject. Comments made by Thomas Edward Brady, a 77-year-old insurance company CEO, who should know better at this point in his life, don't necessarily reflect the views or positions held by his son, Thomas Edward Patrick Brady, Jr. So furthermore, should Tom Sr. continue to speak out on behalf of his son without the express written consent, Junior reserves the right to eventually put him in a home against his will. That's all I have to say."-Brady joked on the "Let's Go" podcast
Tom Brady continued by saying that his father meant well and has always supported him throughout his football career. While it's unclear if there was bad blood between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick both have appeared to move on.
