Tony Romo, CBS and a $180M problem: Everything we know so far
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo agreed to a 10-year contract worth around $180 million with CBS Sports in 2020. Romo, who began covering the NFL in 2017, rose quickly and was well-liked by all.
However, the tale is no longer the same since Romo hasn't been as effective in the broadcasting realm as he was. According to various reports, CBS Sports management sensed last offseason that some of Romo's sparkle had been lost, which led to some sort of intervention.
Jim Nantz is Romo's CBS broadcasting partner, and the network has worked hard to improve their chemistry for the ongoing season. Unfortunately, there has been a consistent decline in Romo's commentary during the games.
Fans and other media members have frequently criticized the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback's performance in the broadcast booth this season. Romo has a long-term contract with CBS, and the organization will likely reach out to him in the upcoming offseason to get him ready for the 2023 campaign.
Super Bowl LVIII, which will be held in Las Vegas on February 12, 2024, will be broadcast on CBS and will require Tony Romo to perform at his best.
Did Tony Romo narrowly avoid a massive mistake in the AFC Championship game?
During this season's AFC Championship Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals, Romo appeared to avoid a big scare. When Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco broke through against a couple of tackles from the Bengals player, Romo changed his words midsentence.
It's unclear if the CBS pundit was about to say the N-word or not, but fans all over the world assumed he was. Stepping away from that, there is now some concern that this might be a word Romo uses off the air.
Aside from this game, Romo was seen applauding Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen during the Divisional round game, which irritated fans. Romo did exhibit favoritism to select players on numerous occasions, which was not well received by the general public.
So far this season, there have been many moments where Romo hasn't sounded good as a broadcaster and he will have to improve going forward. With new players entering the broadcasting field, the former Cowboys quarterback must remain sharp at all times, or else he may be replaced in the future.
