Trey Sermon Waiver Wire Fantasy Outlook Week 5: Is Colts RB a good pickup?
Trey Sermon has shown interesting parts of his game when the Indianapolis Colts have given him the ball.
The 25-year-old running back will have a much bigger role this week after Shane Steichen announced that Jonathan Taylor's ankle issue will keep him sidelined for the Jacksonville Jaguars duel.
This update opens the door for Sermon to take over as the Colts will try to take down the winless Jaguars.
Should you add Colts RB Trey Sermon in Week 5 on the waiver wire?
If Jonathan Taylor's absence last season taught us something, it is that the Colts won't approach it with a committee. They want a clear lead back, just like Zack Moss last season. Sermon will have the chance to be that for Indianapolis at least for this game.
He's already reached the end zone this season against the Chicago Bears in Week 3. Against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he touched the ball five times for eight rushing yards. This week, he's set to get a significant workload against the 0-4 Jaguars.
Trey Sermon's fantasy outlook for 2024 NFL season
Trey Sermon could be in for a good day, as Tyler Goodson, the Colts' RB3, has had one touch the entire season. This position is his this Sunday and the opponents present a big opportunity for him to dominate. The Jaguars defense has allowed the seventh-most fantasy points per game to running backs this season (21.4).
Sermon is ranked as the RB26 in Week 5 by ESPN. He's projected to get 14 carries for 56 rushing yards and one touchdown. Through the air, he's expected to get one reception for nine receiving yards, tallying 11.15 fantasy points, good enough for a solid RB2 production this week.
Is Trey Sermon a good waiver wire pickup in fantasy football?
Jonathan Taylor's injury history makes it complicated not to think that Trey Sermon will have more chances to showcase his talents in the future. Zack Moss was impressive last season and Sermon could take that opportunity this year.
Anthony Richardson's status for Sunday remains unclear, which could help or hurt Sermon's chances to make an impact. The second-year quarterback is a terrific rusher too, but if Joe Flacco is under center this Sunday, Sermon could have more touches.
Sermon has appeared in 18 games since signing with the Colts in 2023, but this matchup will be his biggest opportunity to date.
