Was Micah Parsons snubbed from DPOY consideration? Cowboys star speaks up
Micah Parsons has emerged as one of the NFL's best young defensive players and a star for the Dallas Cowboys. The linebacker was one of the top defensive players this season as he racked up 13.5 sacks, 42 solo tackles, and three forced fumbles. However, when it came to the Defensive Player of the Year award, the Cowboys star did not get one first-place vote.
Ultimately, defensive end Nick Bosa of the San Francisco 49ers took home the award. While some fans feel that Parsons was snubbed for the award, there are no hard feelings from the former Nittany Lions star. Bosa led the league in sacks (18.5) and tackles for loss (21).
Micah Parsons was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting last season. The 23-year-old finished the season with 13 sacks, 20 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles. He received all 50 Rookie of the Year votes and five Defensive Player of the Year votes.
Voting for the NFL awards changed drastically this year, and it seems that Parsons was greatly impacted by that change. The 50 voters of the Associated Press (AP) were only allowed just one player on their MVP ballot under the previous format. Last year, the AP modified the format to where each voter will be allowed to rank their top-five picks for MVP starting this season.
Where did Micah Parsons finish in the Defensive Player of the Year voting?
As mentioned earlier, Micah Parsons did not get a single first-place vote but finished behind Bosa with 101 voting points. Outside of Bosa, three other players got at least one first-place vote. Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Hassan Riddick received two.
Kansas City defensive tackle Chris Jones and New York Jets defensive lineman Quinnen Williams got one vote apiece. Nonetheless, not winning the award does not take away from Parsons' amazing sophomore season. We'll see if the star linebacker takes home the award next season.
