Former offensive lineman Joe Staysniak, who played for the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts, has been arrested. He was hit with two counts of battery and one of strangulation - all against his son and his son's boyfriend.
JPA Football tweeted:
"Update: Former NFL OL Joe Staysniak was arrested on two counts of battery and one of strangulation, per [Yahoo! Sports]. He is accused of assaulting his son & choking his son's boyfriend. The son told officers that he punched him multiple times, giving him a bloody lip."
Staysniak reportedly assaulted and choked his son's boyfriend and punched his son multiple times. He was booked at 1:43 am but was later released from jail that same day.
The former offensive lineman's son told authorities that he and his boyfriend were sitting in a car when Staysniak approached them and began choking the boyfriend.
Staysniak also allegedly had a gun during the confrontation, according to the boyfriend. According to the former Colts lineman, the gun was not pointed at anyone and the confrontation was largely the fault of his son and his son's boyfriend.
A statement from Staysniak's lawyer said via Yahoo! Sports:
"The details of what happened will come out in the courtroom, but we are completely confident that Joe's actions will be conclusively determined to be legal and justified under the circumstance."
According to the lineman, he and his wife had to restrain their son.
Joe Staysniak's controversies
After retiring from the NFL, Joe Staysniak had a radio career, but he was in the midst of controversy even then. Regarding college athletes being paid, he said:
“This just really infuriates me because apparently I was one of the extreme few that actually cherished my scholarship... I scream at the top of my lungs every day when some of these guys are screaming for more money, more money, more money."
During the George Floyd protests, Staysniak reportedly said that he finds it hard to believe that black people are being targeted by police and that they should stop being the victim.
He later apologized after he was suspended from the show.
