What happened to Teddy Bridgewater? Dolphins QB suffers injury to throwing hand on pick-6 play vs. Patriots

Teddy Bridgewater started in place of Tua Tagovailoa in the Miami Dolphins' Week 17 game against the New England Patriots. However, Bridgewater suffered an injury to his right hand after throwing an interception to Patriots safety Kyle Duggar. Duggar ran it back 39 yards for a touchdown.

There is no timetable for Bridgewater's return to the game. Skylar Thompson, the Dolphins' seventh-round pick out of Kansas State, replaced Bridgewater under center.

Prior to his injury, Bridgewater threw for 161 yards with a touchdown and an interception versus the Patriots. He started one other game for Miami this season back in Week 5 versus the New York Jets. The former Louisville quarterback threw just one pass as he exited the game with a concussion.

In all, he's made four appearances this season for the Dolphins. He signed a one-year, $10 million contract in March as a free agent to backup Tagovailoa.

Overall, he's started 64 games in his eight seasons in the NFL. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Bridgewater started 28 games for the Vikings in three seasons, leading them to the playoffs in the 2015-16 season. The quarterback suffered a complete tear of his left ACL in August 2016 during the Vikings' training-camp practice.

Skylar Thompson is in at QB for the Dolphins.

He spent the next two seasons with the New Orleans Saints, starting 15 games before spending the 2020-21 season with the Carolina Panthers. Teddy Bridgewater spent last season with the Denver Broncos before joining the Dolphins ahead of this season.

What happens if Teddy Bridgewater cannot play the rest of the season?

If Bridgewater cannot play in the regular season finale, the Dolphins must bank on Tagovailoa being ready to come out of the concussion protocol. The team might have to lean on Thompson to make his second career start if Teddy Bridgewater cannot go. We'll see what happens to the Miami Dolphins' veteran quarterback as they look to make a playoff push.
