When F1 star Daniel Ricciardo revealed why he 'hates' attending bff Josh Allen's games in Buffalo
Buffalo Bills star QB Josh Allen is so impressive that he is often compared to Patrick Mahomes, the best in today’s era. As expected, he has many fans, but back in 2018, he gained one fan by accident: F1 star Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian was settled in Monte Carlo then and followed the LA Lakers and LA Dodgers. But in the NFL, he chose differently.
When he was interviewed by ESPN in 2021, he revealed that even though he is a fan of Allen and the Bills, he does not attend the games for a particular reason.
“I'm not gonna lie to you; I hate the cold! So it's very weird that I've chosen to support the Bills,” Ricciardo said, adding, “I would struggle. I don't have enough body fat to deal with those temperatures.”
Of course, it would have been difficult for the Australian-born to bear the cold where the temperature is below the zero-degree mark during the NFL season.
Ricciardo picks Allen as an out-of-the-box move
Back in 2018, Ricciardo was invited to a special promotional event for the Monaco Grand Prix, featuring NFL legend Tom Brady. There, he caught an eye-catching throw from Brady, but the throw was made across two different yachts. Brady was standing on a bigger boat, while Ricciardo stood on the smaller one.
“The Brady pass was surreal. Not just to receive the pass, but to do yacht to yacht was crazy," Ricciardo recalled, adding, “First one I caught, then I got cocky and said, 'Let's go further [back]'. We reversed the boat, and I didn't quite catch the next couple.”
Brady was swamped by NFL fans then after winning the Super Bowl prior. So when everyone thought that Ricciardo would make the obvious choice of picking Brady and the Patriots as his favorite, the 35-year-old made an out-of-the-box move:
“I forced myself not to go for a California team. I was like, Let's change it up a little. I thought I am going to go for something a little out of the box."
Ricciardo chose the Bills as they looked like a Super Bowl contender with a 4-1 season record by then. Allen was in the conversation to become that year’s MVP. Praising the rookie QB, Ricciardo said:
“He'd already made a name for himself but was a star on the rise. It's been really cool to follow him.”
Allen is now living up to his name as he leads the Bills to another fruitful year in the 2024-25 season. They are the only team to defeat the Chiefs this season, and Allen is once again a contender for MVP.
