When Josh Allen's insensitive tweets almost ruined his chances of getting drafted in the NFL

Josh Allen was seen as a possible No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, but there was plenty of controversy surrounding the quarterback heading into the big day. The day before the draft, insensitive tweets from Allen surfaced online. Several tweets were racist and have since been deleted:

One tweet read:

"Why are you so white? — If it ain't white, it ain't right!"

He took it a step further in another tweet:

"I dont think you ni**as want a troubled son!"
"stay schemin…” Ni**as Trying To Get At Me."
"Bout to show up these Ni**as at pong."

All of the tweets were from 2012 and 2013, prior to Josh Allen attending the University of Wyoming. At the time, it proved to be highly controversial despite him being a high schooler.

Allen acknowledged the tweets to ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith, apologizing in the hours leading up to the draft. The former Wyoming signal-caller said that he was young and dumb at the time.

The quarterback told Smith that several of the tweets made referenced rap lyrics and television. This included a saying from ABC hit sitcom "Modern Family."

Despite the apology, Allen didn't go No. 1 overall, as that distinction went to Baker Mayfield, who was selected by the Cleveland Browns.

Josh Allen slipped a bit in the NFL draft but not out of the top 10

Allen was the third quarterback taken in the draft as the Buffalo Bills selected him with the seventh overall pick. Mayfield and Sam Darnold (fourth overall) were the other two quarterbacks. In his rookie season, the California native started 11 games for Buffalo, throwing for 2,074 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

His 2,074 yards were the third-most thrown by a rookie quarterback in Bills history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly (3,593) and Dennis Shaw had more (2,507).

While some fans have forgotten Josh Allen's tweets, they serve as a cautionary tale for future NFL players.
