Who is Brock Purdy's father, Shawn Purdy? All you need to know
Brock Purdy's father Shawn Purdy has been on the limelight, thanks to his son. The 49ers QB has had a sensational rise in the NFL over the last few weeks. He was selected as the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Mr. Irrelevant, as the last pick is often known, was not expected to see a down during this NFL season.
He did, however, play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady and came out unscathed. He guided them to a 35-7 triumph, perhaps because he inherited his father, Shawn Purdy's athletic genes.
His father might now be seen in the stands supporting him as the 49ers starting quarterback, but it was in a different sport that he excelled. The elder Purdy played baseball for the University of Florida in Miami. He was selected three times in the amateur draft in 1987, 1989, and 1990. In 1991, he signed with the Angels in the 16th round. He remained in the minor leagues for eight seasons as a pitcher before retiring in 1998 at the age of 29.
When junior Purdy rushed in for his first foray into the end zone, it was all too much for his father. He was seen crying in the stands as his son made sure that the NFL knew of his relevance.
Brock Purdy's journey made his father proud
Brock Purdy began the season as the third-choice quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. Trey Lance was the team's starting quarterback, and when he went down injured, their previous year's starter, Jimmy Garoppolo, replaced him. With a strong team around him, he was leading the 49ers to a place where they could have made a Super Bowl run.
However, as luck would have it, even Garoppolo went down injured last week with a broken foot. That allowed Brock Purdy to take over and lead the 49ers to a 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins, who were in red-hot form.
However, this week brought a bigger challenge for the rookie. Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers came to town. Brady was going to play against the team he supported as a young boy, and beating the GOAT as a rookie was nearly impossible.
Brock Purdy was having none of the burdens of history. He was dialed in as he led the 49ers to a 35-0 lead over the Buccaneers in the third quarter. He also rushed for a touchdown and completed two touchdown passes to help his team reach that point.
He certainly made sure he became relevant with his performance this week against Tom Brady.
