Why did Eagles fire Andy Reid? Revisiting Super Bowl-winning Chiefs HC's stint in Philadelphia
Andy Reid has established himself as one of the NFL's most successful head coaches. The veteran coach has guided the Kansas City Chiefs to three Super Bowl wins, since taking over as head coach in 2013.
Reid led the Chiefs to a 32-29 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, setting up a Super Bowl meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 9 in New Orleans. Since the veteran coach joined the Chiefs in 2013, this is the second time he will be facing his old team, the Eagles, in the Super Bowl. Reid was fired by the Eagles after 14 years as head coach from 1999 to 2012 (130-93). But why?
With an overall record of 140-102-1, Philadelphia qualified for the postseason on nine occasions and finished with a record of .500 or higher in 11 of Reid's 14 seasons with the team. However, the head coach received a lot of flak for his bad clock management, which gave opponents chances to win close contests in the closing minutes.
Although Reid was an impactful coach for the Eagles, his failure to overcome the Super Bowl hurdle during his tenure in Philadelphia ultimately resulted in his dismissal in 2012.
In 2012, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie fired Andy Reid after the team had gone on a 12–20 run in two seasons (2011-12).
Did Andy Reid led the Eagles to a Super Bowl in his time there?
Andy Reid's Kansas City Chiefs have a golden opportunity to make history and become the only team to win three straight Super Bowls after winning another AFC Championship on Sunday. But did the 66-year-old coach make the Super Bowl during his time with the Eagles?
Surprisingly, the Eagles appointed Reid, who had no prior play-calling expertise and was coaching the Green Bay Packers quarterbacks.
Reid swiftly guided the Eagles to five consecutive postseason berths from 2000–2004, winning 59 games during the regular season, following a dismal debut season (5-11). Even though that was really amazing, those seasons also included constant big postseason letdowns.
Reid and the Eagles advanced to their only Super Bowl together in 2004, when they fell 24–21 to a New England Patriots side led by quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick. Before then, the Eagles had suffered three consecutive losses in NFC Championship games under Reid.
