Will Jim Harbaugh end up with the Indianapolis Colts?
Jim Harbaugh is one the NFL’s most well-known head coaching candidates. Will he be hired by the Indianapolis Colts in the coming weeks?
Harbaugh, of course, is the current football coach at Michigan. He has spent eight seasons at the school, compiling a 74-25 record and winning the Big Ten title in each of the past two seasons. He also had collegiate stints with San Diego and Stanford.
At the NFL level, Harbaugh served as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-2014. He had a 44-19-1 record and guided the team to the NFC Championship Game three times and the Super Bowl once.
Indianapolis recently interviewed Colts special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. However, Harbaugh has yet to be interviewed by the team.
The Colts, who finished this season with a 4-12-1 record, are in desperate need a of a new head coach. Frank Reich was fired back in November and replaced by interim coach Jeff Saturday, who won his first game, but lost his last seven.
Jim Harbaugh, the former quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts
Harbaugh spent 14 seasons as an NFL quarterback from 1987-2000. He played for the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens and San Diego Chargers. But he's probably best known for his three-year stint with the Colts from 1994-1997.
1995 was the best season of his career as he threw for 2,575 yards, a career-high 17 touchdowns and only five interceptions.
“Captain Comeback” was also named to the Pro Bowl, won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award and led the Colts all the way to the AFC Championship Game, where they fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Harbaugh was replaced by Peyton Manning in 1998 and later coached fellow Colts QB legend Andrew Luck at Stanford.
Will we see Jim Harbaugh back in Indy?
Although Harbaugh has ties to the Colts, don't expect him to return to the team that he once played quarterback for.
Look for him to either stay in Michigan or take an NFL job with a team like the Denver Broncos, who fired Nathaniel Hackett a few weeks back. The Broncos have a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Russell Wilson, who Harbaugh could help return to an elite quarterback. The Colts will likely start a rookie QB next season, making a head coaching job much more difficult.
