The Florida Panthers are a professional ice hockey team based in Sunrise, Florida, near Fort Lauderdale, competing in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). Founded in 1993, the team derived its name from the endangered Florida panther. Despite being an expansion team, the Panthers quickly became competitive, narrowly missing playoff qualification in their first two seasons. In the 1995–96 season, led by standout goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck, they secured a postseason berth and made a surprising run to the Stanley Cup finals, ultimately falling to the Colorado Avalanche. Although they returned to the playoffs the following year, they were eliminated in the first round.
The team endured a playoff drought until the 1999–2000 season, experiencing varying degrees of success until 2015–16 when they captured their first division title. Despite franchise-record wins in 2021–22, they were eliminated in the playoffs. In 2022–23, they achieved the prestigious Stanley Cup victory for the first time in history.
