Roger Staubach’s Early Life
Roger Staubach was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on 5 February 1942. He grew up in Silverton, Ohio. He went to the St. John the Evangelist Catholic School; he was a Boy Scout as well. In 1960, he graduated from the Catholic high school Purcell High School in Cincinnati, presently known as Purcell Marian High School.
In his early years as a youth, Roger Staubach was enrolled at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell for a year. While he was preparing for his naval career, he set school records for passing yards and recorded 18 total touchdowns.
In 1961, Roger Staubach entered the U.S. Naval Academy and played as a quarterback for the Navy Midshipmen football team. In 1962, he got a break to participate in the third game of the season. He relieved starter Ron Klemick and played his first game against the University of Minnesota. Coach Wayne Hardin decided to use Staubach in the game against Cornell University. He led his team through difficult times with grace and it led to six touchdowns, throwing for 99 yards and while running for 99 yards he scored two touchdowns.
Navy Midshipmen won the match by 41-0. Staubach started again in the famous Army-Navy game in the presence of President John F. Kennedy. In the 1963 season, he earned the Maxwell Award, the Heisman Trophy and the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy. He also appeared on the cover of Time. He steered the Midshipmen to a 9-1 regular season record and the team was ranked as second in the nation after the University of Texas. The Midshipmen lost the national championship to the University of Texas in the 1964 Cotton Bowl.
Over the three-season span at the U.S. Naval Academy, Roger Staubach recorded 292 of 463 passes, ended with 18 touchdowns and 19 interceptions, and gained a school record 4,253 yards of total offence. He was the final athlete from a military academy who won the Heisman Trophy and the Navy finished the season at 3-6-1.
In 1981, Staubach was immortalized in the College Football Hall of Fame.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, he opted to volunteer for a one-year tour of duty in South Vietnam.
