Can you solo defeat Galarian Starter Max Battles in Pokemon GO?
Pokemon GO's latest round of Max Battles features the Galarian starter Pokemon Grookey, Sobble, and Scorbunny. These Max Battles will be available at Power Spots beginning on October 1, 2024, and plenty of trainers will take them on to obtain rewards and chances to capture these Dynamax-compatible starters, but can they beaten solo? As luck would have it, all these battles can be beaten solo.
Since all of these Max Battles are considered low rank (one-star), using the right Dynamax-capable Pokemon who can learn the appropriate Max Moves can allow you to defeat these Galarian starter Pokemon with little struggle. However, it's advised that when selecting counters for these Max Battles, your Pokemon of choice should have the highest possible IV stats.

How to solo defeat Grookey Max Battles in Pokemon GO
Because Grookey is weak to Bug, Fire, Flying, Ice, and Poison attacks in Pokemon GO, Pokemon using these moves are the best pick to solo defeat Grookey Max Battles. The counter Pokemon should use one of the counter types as their Fast Move, as it will transform into a Max Move of the same type once Dynamax is activated for the attacking Pokemon.
Specifically, the following Max Moves will be ideal for beating Grookey's Max Battles solo:
- Max Flare
- Max Ooze
- Max Flutterby
- Max Hailstorm
- Max Airstream
Since there's a considerably small pool of Dynamax-capable Pokemon at the moment, the recommended picks are Fire-type Dynamax Pokemon with access to a Fast Move that converts into Max Flare. The following Pokemon and Fast Moves are capable of converting into Max Flare:
- Charmander (Ember)
- Charmeleon (Ember)
- Charizard (Fire Spin) (Charizard can also learn Air Slash, which will convert to Max Airstream)
- Scorbunny (Fire Spin)
- Rabboot (Fire Spin)
- Cinderace (Fire Spin)
How to solo defeat Sobble Max Battles in Pokemon GO
As a Water-type Pokemon in Pokemon GO, Sobble is weak against only Grass and Electric-type attacks. This narrows the counter options a bit, but with the right counters, solo defeating Sobble Max Battles fairly easily is still possible. Below, you can find the Max Moves that are perfect for defeating Sobble in Max Battles:
- Max Lightning
- Max Overgrowth
Since Grass-type Pokemon naturally resist Sobble's Water-type attacks, they're great candidates for soloing Sobble Max Battles. Below are the recommended Dynamax Pokemon complete with Fast Moves to convert into Max Overgrowth and overtake Sobble:
- Bulbasaur (Vine Whip)
- Ivysaur (Vine Whip)
- Venusaur (Vine Whip)
- Grookey (Razor Leaf)
- Thwackey (Razor Leaf)
- Rillaboom (Razor Leaf)
Other Dynamax Pokemon can also accomplish this solo Max Battle job, but it's best to avoid Pokemon incapable of dealing super effective damage (like other Water types) to Sobble or those weak to its Water-type attacks (like Fire types in Pokemon GO).
How to solo defeat Scorbunny Max Battles in Pokemon GO
As a Fire-type species in Pokemon GO, Scorbunny is weak to Water-, Rock-, and Ground-type attacks. This makes the following Max Moves the best options on the table when soloing Scorbunny Max Battles:
- Max Geyser
- Max Rockfall
- Max Quake
There aren't too many Dynamax-compatible Pokemon available as counter options at the moment. Due to this, Water-type Dynamax Pokemon that can convert their Fast Moves into Max Geyser will be the best bet, and Water-types naturally resist the damage from Scorbunny's Fire-type moves. Greedent can also perform due to its access to Max Quake with the Fast Move Mud Shot.
Below are the recommended Dynamax-capable Pokemon/Fast Moves for countering Scorbunny solo:
- Squirtle (Water Gun)
- Wartortle (Water Gun)
- Blastoise (Water Gun)
- Sobble (Water Gun)
- Drizzile (Water Gun)
- Inteleon (Water Gun)
- Greedent (Mud Shot)
Other Dynamax-capable Pokemon are also capable of soloing Scorbunny Max Battles, but the picks above will provide the best super-effective damage at the moment to bring down Scorbunny quickly. Additionally, it's highly recommended not to use Bug or Grass-type Dynamax Pokemon since they're weak to Scorbunny's Fire-type arsenal.
