Can you solo defeat Groudon in Pokemon GO 5-star raids?

Groudon is returning to Pokemon GO in Five-Star raids, later in September 2024. With Niantic's recent Raid Battle changes having greatly reworked the difficulty of these challenges, many trainers may find this fight too troublesome to take on in small groups. Therefore, it is currently impossible for players to solo defeat this critter.

Groudon will be available in Five-Star Raid Battles from September 14 until the 26. During this time, the critter can be challenged remotely as well as in person using raid passes.

This article will explain why solo defeating Groudon in Pokemon GO's Five-Star Raid Battles is currently impossible.

Groudon cannot be taken down by a single trainer in its Raid Battle mostly due to the new changes made to Raid Boss AI. With these changes, Raid Bosses generate much more energy for their charged attacks whenever they incur damage. In addition to this, these bosses now have a 50% chance of using their charged attack after a fast attack if it is fully charged.

This pairs dangerously with its access to Precipice Blades, the strongest Ground-type charged attack in the game. Groudon also has a base attack stat of 270, and this attack benefits from the same-type attack bonus, further boosting its damage thanks to the move matching Groudon's Ground typing.

Even with the best possible counters like Primal Kyogre and Mega Sceptile, Groudon's damage output and high stamina still make it impossible to take down without help from at least one other player. Even in rainy or sunny weather, these critters still aren't strong enough to outpower or outlast Groudon.

As of September 2024, there are no creatures in Pokemon GO strong enough to solo defeat Groudon in Five-Star Raid Battles.

Trainers should bring at least one companion to this fight if they have access to some of the best counters possible. Given the recent changes made to Raid Boss AI, four players would be a safe amount to attend this battle.

Here are some of the best counters players can bring to this fight:

  • Primal or Shadow Kyogre with Waterfall and Origin Pulse
  • Mega or Shadow Sceptile with Bullet Seed and Frenzy Plant
  • Mega or Shadow Venusaur with Vine Whip and Frenzy Plant
  • Zarude with Vine Whip and Power Whip
  • Shadow Tangrowth with Vine Whip and Power Whip
  • Meowscarada with Leafage and Grass Knot
  • Kartana with Razor Leaf and Leaf Blade
