How to get Leavanny in Pokemon GO, and can it be shiny?

Leavanny has become a hot topic among Pokemon GO players due to the Sewaddle Community Day on October 5, 2024. Many trainers are wondering how they will be able to obtain Leavanny during the event and whether or not the critter's shiny form will be available in the game.

Thankfully, the Sewaddle Community Day will have the shiny variants for each of the featured creature's stages. However, some players may have questions in regards to how they can evolve Swadloon into Leavanny, given how the evolution uses the main series' friendship mechanics.

Here is everything to know about obtaining Leavanny in Pokemon GO.

Tips for finding Leavanny in Pokemon GO

The Sewaddle Community Day is the best time to hunt for a Shiny Leavanny in Pokemon GO. During this event, players will have a much higher chance of encountering a Shiny Sewaddle. After catching their Shiny Sewaddle, players can evolve it into a Shiny Leavanny.

To first evolve Sewaddle into Swadloon, players will need to collect 25 candies. This should prove to be no issue, given the increased spawn rate of the species during the Community Day, as well as the event's double mulitplier to candies received from catching creatures.

Thankfully, there is no gimmick required to evolve Swadloon into Leavanny, like there is in the main series. Players only need to collect 100 candies for Swadloon to be able to evolve into Leavanny. While this is a much steeper grind compared to the first stage, Pinap Berries should make the process more bearable.

Is Leavanny worth it in Pokemon GO?

While some players want to try out Leavanny in Pokemon GO's Battle League following the addition of Shadow Claw into its movepool, this should be delegated as an intrusive thought rather than a serious strategy. While its high attack and decent stamina may look promising, the creature still has one of the worst typings in the franchise's history.

Grass and Bug are notoriously terrible to match with each other as they share multiple weaknesses. Specifically, this typing gives Leavanny a double weakness to not just Fire-type attacks but also Flying-type moves. It is also weak to Rock-, Poison-, Ice-, and other Bug-type attacks.

One advantage of Leavanny now having Shadow Claw is that it has coverage against any target that would normally resist its Bug- and Grass-type attacks. However, it is slightly weaker than Bug Bite due to Shadow Claw not benefiting from the same-type attack bonus.

Overall, Leavanny is still one of the most frail Bug-type creatures players can use in the competitive scene. While its access to Leaf Blade gives it some great shield pressure, and it does sport a high attack stat, it is much too fragile to be used effectively.

However, if a trainer has a team built around Leavanny and high-level battle experience, it could be done in the Ultra League.
