Is it worth upgrading Max Battle rewards with PokeCoins in Pokemon GO?

Pokemon GO's new Max Out season may not have started off on the right foot in the eyes of the general playerbase. While the promise of new Galar Pokemon and Dynamax forms was captivating when the season was announced, the implementation of the gimmick and its respective battles has somewhat fallen apart in practice.

One of the biggest offenders that has left many players scoffing is the new option for trainers to receive bonus items from Max Battles in exchange for PokeCoins. While there are a lot of factors to consider when debating whether or not to take this offer, it is currently not worth pursuing.

When the option to increase the rewards from Pokemon GO Max Battles was revealed in the mechanic's trailer, the cost of doing so was set to 100 PokeCoins. However, many players noticed that this price was doubled when the feature was introduced into the actual game, now costing 200 PokeCoins.

The current One-Star Raids only offer a couple items, like rare candies or Golden Razz Berries. This means players would be spending 200 PokeCoins to receive an additional item and 1,000 more profile XP.

Given how 200 PokeCoins cost around $2 USD, this is not a very good deal.

Since One-Star Raids are the only Max Battles in Pokemon GO at the moment, the rewards given away for Three and Five-Star Max Battles could be much better. Three-Star Max Battles are coming to the game on September 18, 2024, starting with the Psychic Spectacular event.

The price could be adjusted back down to the promised 100 PokeCoins, and more players may consider this deal. However, PokeCoins can be incredibly hard to come by for those who prefer not to spend money on the mobile title, so it is unlikely that a big portion of the community will invest in this purchasable bonus.

Players can get much more value from 200 PokeCoins at the in-game shop

As it is currently implemented in Pokemon GO, players are not recommeneded to purchase the loot multiplier. Since Max Battle loot pools are underwhelming as of the GO Big event, trainers can get much more value from 200 PokeCoins at the in-game shop rather than just using them for an additional Rare Candy.

If Niantic reduces this cost to 100 PokeCoins, like the trailer stated, and if the drops for higher-tier Max Battles are better, this feature could be worth the investment.

If Niantic introduces special loot drops during events, it may incentivize more players to spend PokeCoins on the bonus. As it stands, the cost is too high for many trainers to consider.
