Pokemon GO Galarian Expedition preparation guide

Pokemon GO's Galarian Expedition event is set to take place on October 4, 2024, at 10:00 am local time until October 11, 2024, at 8:00 pm. During its run, players can look forward to encountering a variety of featured Pokemon, including new shiny creatures. Additionally, there will be opportunities to collect another Master Ball.

With a few days left until the Galarian Expedition goes live, it's worth examining what the Pokemon GO event will bring and how best to prepare to take full advantage of it.

Galarian Pokemon Zamazenta will appear in its Hero of Many Battles form throughout the entirety of Galarian Expedition as a 5-star raid boss. Since this Fighting-type Pokemon is a solid battler in Master League PvP, it might be worth fighting in these event raids. Fortunately, as a mono Fighting-type species, Zamazenta isn't particularly difficult to counter.

Not only is Zamazenta a quality battler in PvP's upper-echelon formats, but it will also be obtaining its shiny form during Galarian Expedition. This presents the first opportunity for trainers to catch Shiny Zamazenta.

New shiny arrivals in Pokemon GO Galarian Expedition

In addition to the arrival of Shiny Zamazenta (which should have a 1/20 shiny appearance chance unless otherwise boosted), Galarian Expedition is finally introducing the shiny variants of Galarian Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. These three rare Pocket Monsters can be found by using the Daily Adventure Incense, though their shiny appearance rate isn't yet known.

While raid Pokemon like Zamazenta have a base shiny rate solely for appearing as a legendary in 5-star raids, these three Galarian legendaries are a different story since they can only be found via the Daily Adventure Incense thus far.

Whatever the case, the Galarian Bird Trio is already extremely rare, so their shiny appearance rates may follow suit during and after the Galarian Expedition event.

Field and Masterwork Research

During Galarian Expedition, new Field Research Tasks will be made available for trainers who spin Pokestops and obtain them. Rewards mentioned by Niantic include XP, Stardust, and encounters with themed Pokemon from the event. Additionally, trainers can purchase a ticket for the event's Masterwork Research for $7.99 USD or the equivalent in their country's currency.

By purchasing this ticket, trainers can undertake a new Masterwork Research questline that, when fully completed, will provide the following rewards, including a coveted Master Ball that can catch any Pokemon without fail:

  • 18,000 total XP
  • 10,000 Stardust
  • Encounters with event-themed Pokemon as well as the likes of Galarian Farfetch'd and Galarian Mr. Mime
  • Additional rewards that have not yet been disclosed by Niantic

Preparation tips for Pokemon GO Galarian Expedition

In addition to collecting Poke Balls, Incense, and Lure Modules like preparation for most GO events, Galarian Expedition players will benefit highly if they stockpile raid passes (either standard or remote) and find a group of friends in order to take on Zamazenta raids.

Additionally, if at all possible, it might be worth saving up some money to purchase the Masterwork Research ticket to get a Master Ball.

Pokemon and shinies to prioritize during Pokemon GO Galarian Expedition

Regardless of whether trainers are shiny hunting or seeking Pokemon that can evolve into strong PvP or PvE fighters, there are more than a few creatures to prioritize during Galarian Expedition.

While players are free to hunt for Pokemon during the event as they please, these Pocket Monsters are worth investing time in for those who are searching for shinies or strong fighters:

PvE Pokemon worth prioritizing

  • Abra
  • Magneton
  • Metagross
  • Shinx
  • Aron

PvP Pokemon worth prioritizing

  • Zamazenta
  • Nidoran (Female)
  • Spheal
  • Aron
  • Beldum
  • Dedenne
  • Wooloo

Shiny Pokemon worth prioritizing

  • Galarian Articuno
  • Galarian Zapdos
  • Galarian Moltres
  • Zamazenta
  • Beldum
  • Dedenne
  • Absol
  • Emolga

Fortunately, thanks to the Galarian Expedition event being a week long, there's plenty of time to catch many of these prioritized Pokemon. However, the Galarian Bird Trio is highly unlikely to be obtained during the event alone, especially its shiny variants. Fortunately, their shiny forms will be available in Pokemon GO going forward, so trainers can keep hunting after the event concludes.

Additionally, it's worth noting that Daily Adventure Incense will begin to spawn other Pokemon beginning with this event and going forward. It's unclear which Pocket Monsters Niantic has in mind, but it might be worth using a few Daily Adventure Incense during Galarian Expedition to find out.
