"He’s Mexican making a Mexican joke" — Internet defends George Lopez's Mexicans speech after criticizing Tony Hinchcliffe's Puerto Rico joke
American comedian and actor George Lopez recently made an appearance at the Harris-Walz campaign on October 27, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona. As he climbed up the stage, he imitated Donald Trump's dance moves and proceeded to give a speech endorsing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
In his speech, George joked about the time Donald Trump said he'd build a wall in 2015 to stop illegal immigrants from coming into the country. The comedian said:
"Donald Trump said he was going to build a wall and George Lopez said you better build it in one day because if you leave that material out there overnight...."
George's joke led MAGA supporters to comment on why George making a joke on Mexicans didn't meet with the same kind of negativity that Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe's comment on Puerto Rico did.
On October 27, 2024, Tony was one of the openers for Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden wherein he called Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage" which led to a lot of criticism for the comedian.
An X user tweeted "Apparently, Left-wing media only don’t care when their comedians make jokes" referring to the situation, and internet users were quick to defend George Lopez. Referring to how George made a joke about his own ethnicity, an X user tweeted:
"He’s Mexican making a Mexican joke, Tony is a white guy from Ohio speaking on Puerto Rico as a floating garbage dump. Not the same at all"
"Because he's Mexican you idiot. He's allowed, like Jewish comedians joke about Jews, Italians etc. Do we have to spell it out for you, how comedy works? This Tony guy isn't Latino or Puerto Rican. He's not funny," another X user said.
"Great, is Tony Puerto Rican? If not then that’s not his joke to make," another netizen said.
"This isn't racist, it's a freaking joke. C'mon patriots, don't be hypocrites and play by the left's rules when it suits you," one person commented.
"It couldn’t have anything to do with George Lopez being a MEXICAN comedian? And the MAGA twat a white man?" another netizen stated.
"I have known Kamala Harris for 16 years"- George Lopez mentions at the Harris-Walz campaign in Phoenix
Adding to his joke about Donald Trump building a wall to stop immigrants from entering the U.S., comedian George Lopez said that the former president mentioned that he was going to get Mexico to pay for the wall.
George said Trump should've asked him before claiming the same because Mexicans "can’t even really split a check at a restaurant.” Then, George endorsed Kamala Harris and mentioned:
"I have known Kamala Harris for 16 years and she is the real deal, that is who she is."
The comedian said that Harris comes from a great family and that he knew Harris' mother who was a scientist. He also said that voters would be sending Kamala Harris to the White House and his line was met with a lot of cheer from the rally attendees.
George Lopez also joked about how he thought Trump was a Latino at first quoting:
"I mean he messed up the first time and then he says "let me back in there I'll do better." We're not going back."
As George quoted Kamala Harris' slogan from September 2024 referring to not voting for Trump again, the rally attendees cheered saying "We're not going back" and George clapped in unison with them.
