"I’m sure he’ll get more in NY"— Internet reacts to Luigi Mangione reportedly getting 87 mails while in Pennsylvania prison
Luigi Mangione, the man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has received 87 mails in just over a week after he was arrested and jailed. He was taken into custody on December 9 and was held in a pre-trial detention facility in Huntington before his extradition to New York on Thursday, December 19.
A Pennsylvania Department of Corrections spokesperson told The Independent on Thursday that Mangione received 54 emails, 87 pieces of mail, and 163 commissary deposits as of that morning. That said, the spokesperson didn't provide an exact amount of money deposited in Mangione's commissary account, which he can use to buy items from behind bars.
News of Luigi Mangione's over 100 mails received while in prison made waves online, and netizens think he will receive even more once he's transferred to New York.
"I'm sure he'll get more in NY...I've seen mailing instructions on several different subs. I may or may not have saved the post for future reference...ya know just in case," a Reddit user commented.
Other netizens commented that they thought 87 mails and 54 emails were small numbers, with someone else pointing out about hearing other mails not getting through.
"Yeah, I thought it would have been a lot more than that," a user on Reddit commented.
"That's not enough, we're letting him down," another Reddit user said.
"I saw people in a different thread on a different sub saying they couldn't even get through, or of they did their donation attempts were rejected. So that's probably all the jail allowed," a user on Reddit added.
Some netizens theorized that fans would be sending even more correspondence once Luigi Mangione is in New York.
"I like to think that they were waiting for him to be transferred because sending an inmate anything is a huge hassle and only gets more annoying when it gets sent to a facility they're only staying in temporarily," a Reddit user said.
"Was he there for long though? People are probably waiting for him to be transferred so he can actually access anything they send him," another Reddit user said.
Luigi Mangione's mails will be forwarded to his detention facility in New York.
Luigi Mangione's attorney says strangers have offered to fund his legal bills amid an outpouring of mails
Luigi Mangione has drawn wide attention from admirers all over the internet since he was taken into custody last week. Besides sending fan mails and commissary donations, the suspected killer also received monetary support for his legal bills.
Luigi Mangione's Pennsylvania attorney, Thomas Dickey, told CNN's Kaitlan Collins on Tuesday, December 10, that his office received emails from people who wanted to offer to help pay for Mangione's legal bills. However, he said that he's not likely going to accept such offers because "it just doesn't sit right" with him.
Dickey also said this about people donating money to his client's defense funds via ABC News on December 15:
"People are entitled to their opinion and, like I said, if you're an American and you believe in the American criminal justice system, you have to presume him to be innocent and none of us would want anything other than that if that were us in their shoes. So, I'm glad he had some support."
His comments came after Mangione's supporters, who called themselves "The December 4th Legal Committee," established a GiveSendGo defense fund under his name. The fund raised over $100,000 as of Sunday, December 15, morning and over $130,000 by afternoon the next day, per The Independent.
