"I tried to spit in his face"- Shyne claims Diddy offered to pay him $50K after taking the fall, details prison visit
Shyne Barrow, Belize's Leader of the Opposition, recently opened up about Diddy since the rapper’s arrest. The rapper-turned-politician is now traveling to promote his new Hulu documentary, The Honorable Shyne, which will be launched on November 18.
Appearing on the Breakfast Club on Monday, November 18, the politician then opened up about his thoughts on Diddy and denied the long-standing rumor that he was paid off to take the fall after the 1999 shooting which got him arrested.
Shyne also claimed that Diddy once reportedly tried to make amends with him by giving him $50,000. He said:
“2012.. That was the first attempt at reconciliation after I got out. I got out in 2009. And then it took a couple of years before I said, you know, we reached out… I felt he owed me something, he gave me $50 racks. I said you can’t be serious. 10 years? 50 racks..."
He continued:
“He came to see me once and I think I tried to spit in his face…. I didn't want him to come back. I didn't even want him to come see me. I didn't even know he was coming to see me… They just brought me down in the lawyer's office.”
Shyne blamed Diddy for destroying his life
During his appearance on The Breakfast Club, talking about the time Diddy reportedly visited him during his prison days, he said:
“He owes me, he's a billionaire. If it wasn't for me, he wouldn't have been a billionaire. If I would have cooperated with the district attorney, he'd have went to jail and heaven knows what would have happened to his career.”
This wasn't the first time Shyne had talked about Diddy. Four days before the interview, on November 14, during his appearance on The Stephen A. Smith Show, Shyne said that he once viewed Diddy as the devil during their tense relationship after the 1999 shooting.
He also talked about the reasons that allegedly caused their relationship to fall apart. Talking about the same, he said:
“I’ve always maintained in every interview I did until recently when I healed and I moved on and I forgave, but for years I was saying what a creep I thought he was and how he destroyed my life and at one point, I thought he was the devil.”
Shyne then continued:
“But because of the power of Diddy which is so loud as a pop culture icon, nobody listened. And so I moved on! And I pivoted my life to healing, to forgiveness and to taking accountability for what I can control.”
Additionally, two months ago, in an interview with the Belizean media on Wednesday, September 18, he also discussed Diddy's imprisonment. When questioned about the rapper's arrest, the former Bad Boy member talked about the same nightclub shooting that led to his 10-year prison sentence.
Barrow here referred to the shooting that took place at a New York City nightclub in December 1999, which he, Diddy, and the rapper's then-girlfriend, singer Jennifer Lopez, witnessed. However, it was reported that Shyne had allegedly shot and injured two people during a fight with Diddy.
He was then convicted of the assault in June 2001 and given a 10-year prison sentence. He was ultimately released in 2009 and transported to Belize. Speaking about the same and the rapper's role in the shooting, he claimed that Diddy had testified against him during his trial.
He then alleged that as an 18-year-old, who only wanted to make his mother and Belize proud, he was just trying to protect Combs. He also said that the rapper turned against him and invited other people to testify against him. He then went on to blame the rapper for putting him in jail.
Shyne then discussed Combs' arrest and accusations, stating that he had allegedly cut ties with the hip-hop mogul. He also maintained that their relationship was only business-related and asserted that the artist ruined his life.
On the other hand, Diddy, who was denied bail twice, is currently in jail. On Thursday, October 10, US District Judge Arun Subramanian scheduled the trial for next May in Manhattan.
