Donald Trump appoints Elon Musk as co-head of Department of Government Efficiency
According to an NPR report dated November 12, 2024, Donald Trump appointed Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy co-heads of the newly launched Department of Government Efficiency.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Trump called the new agency the 'Department of Government Efficiency' (DOGE), a name that seems to nod to the dog-themed cryptocurrency, Dogecoin.
Furthermore, in a statement, Trump suggested that he is looking forward to Elon Musk and Ramaswamy bringing improvements to the federal government.
"Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies - Essential to the 'Save America' Movement," Trump wrote.
He continued,
"I look forward to Elon and Vivek making changes to the Federal Bureaucracy with an eye on efficiency and, at the same time, making life better for all Americans."
Meanwhile, Elon Musk joined the conversation as well. On Wednesday, November 13, he took to his X account to suggest that all actions taken by the Department of Government Efficiency would be posted online to ensure the highest level of transparency.
"All actions of the Department of Government Efficiency will be posted online for maximum transparency. Anytime the public thinks we are cutting something important or not cutting something wasteful, just let us know!" Musk stated.
According to NPR, the appointment for the new department also marks the official entry of Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate, into Trump's administration. Ramaswamy had previously been considered for the vice presidency.
Moreover, whether this new department will be part of the federal government or operate separately remains to be seen. An official government agency can only be created with approval from Congress.
As of now, it remains to be seen what formal procedures Elon Musk and Ramaswamy will need to undergo for their respective roles, as most department heads require Senate confirmation, which is still pending.
