"People act like there's no such thing as Google" — Charlamagne Tha God laughs at Lara Trump saying her father-in-law is not racist
Charlamagne Tha God butted heads with Lara Trump, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's daughter-in-law, when she appeared on the former's show, The Breakfast Club, on October 21, 2024.
Lara Trump claimed that her father-in-law was "really beneficial" to the Black community when he was president and that she had never heard him "say a racist thing". This elicited a laugh from Charlamagne Tha God, which seemingly offended Lara.
She turned to him, asking what he found funny. Charlamagne Tha God replied that her answer was "hysterical."
“It‘s hysterical because people act like there‘s no such thing as Google, or we don’t have TV or we don’t have radio,” Charlamagne Tha God added.
Prior to the interaction, the show's co-host DJ Envy had asked Lara Trump about her thoughts regarding people's notion that Donald Trump was racist. He cited a few examples, including his lawsuit in the 1970s for allegedly refusing to rent to Black people and his behavior towards the Central Park Five, who recently sued the former president for defamation.
Lara called the rhetoric "ridiculous" adding:
"That‘s ridiculous. I’ve known this man for sixteen years. There was never any proof of anything with the houses; they settled that. There was no admission of anything there. Donald Trump was really beneficial to the Black community when he was in the White House. I will say I’ve never seen this man say a racist thing."
The Central Park Five refers to the five Black and Latino men who were wrongfully convicted of r*ping and assaulting a white woman when they were teenagers in 1989.
Following the crime, Trump put out a full-page ad in the New York Times calling for the death penalty to be reinstated, which many felt was in connection with the Central Park Five. However, their convictions were dissolved in 2002 after serial r*pist Matias Reyes confessed to the crime.
Charlamagne Tha God asked Lara Trump about her father-in-law's rhetoric against immigrants
During her appearance on The Breakfast Club with Charlamagne Tha God, Lara Trump said that her father-in-law was beloved by many people in his country. She added that he was friends with former US Senator Jesse Jackson and allowed the Rainbow Coalition to stay rent-free in his building.
Lara also said that it was a "traditional talking point" to attack Republicans by calling them racists, adding that all Donald Trump wanted was for every American to be successful and pursue the "American dream."
When Charlamagne Tha God asked her about Trump's rhetoric about the Muslim, Mexican, and Haitian minorities in the US, Lara insisted that Trump was only against immigrants who entered the US illegally.
"If you're an American citizen, Donald Trump doesn't care [about] your religion. He doesn't care what you look like," she said.
Donald Trump recently claimed that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were killing and eating people's pets during the presidential debate in September. This was debunked by the city manager, who claimed they had received no reports of similar activities.
"In Springfield, they are eating the dogs. The people that came in, they are eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there," Trump claimed during the debate.
In other news, Charlamagne Tha God also had U.S. Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris on his show on October 15. Harris touched on topics that included her record during her time as the district attorney and the "mis- and disinformation" that was skewing her popularity with the Black community, among others.
Trump and Harris continue their respective campaigns ahead of the November 5 election. On Monday, Harris joined Liz Cheney to tour through Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, while Trump campaigned in North Carolina.
