Was Ella Emhoff hospitalized? Kamala Harris' stepdaughter debunks claims of mental breakdown and institutionalization
Kamala Harris' stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff, shuts down rumors about her allegedly having a mental breakdown and being institutionalized, following Harris losing the 2024 presidential election. The 25-year-old said that talks about her being hospitalized are "not true." In an Instagram Story she posted on Saturday, November 9, 2024, Emhoff wrote:
"Okay, I'm just gonna go out and say it. There's a rumor about me having a mental breakdown and getting checked into a hospital. Not true."
Ella Emhoff's comment comes after photos of her emotional outburst circulated online, with some claiming that the 25-year-old model and artist was suffering from a mental breakdown.
The said photos were taken after Kamala Harris gave her concession speech on November 6, addressing the nation at the Howard University in Washington, DC, after Donald Trump secured a presidential victory.
That said, Ella Emhoff isn't backing down from the rumor mill as she calls out people spreading lies about her or her mental well-being online. She further wrote:
"Also f**k you if you're out there spreading that."
Ella Emhoff's mother, Kerstin Emhoff, also took to social media to address the rumors about her daughter supposedly having a mental breakdown. She wrote on X on November 9:
"More MAGA bs against my family. Leave my kids alone!!! Ella is going great and spending a lovely day with her mom!"
The Emhoff matriarch also noted that "having the ability to show emotion," referring to her daughter crying in the now viral pictures, "is something we should all hope for." She further noted that they are not letting anyone break down their family.

Furthermore, in her recent Instagram Story, Ella Emhoff addressed the pictures after Kamala Harris' concession speech, showing the 25-year-old getting emotional. Alongside a mirror selfie where she's wearing a cropped white shirt and baggy jeans while holding a blue dog toy, Emhoff wrote:
"There's nothing wrong with showing emotion and crying. Anyone who says there is probably needs a good cry."
Emhoff also emphasized her mental health struggles in her statement, further saying:
"I've struggled with my mental health my whole life and I'm not ashamed of it."
It's not the first time Emhoff has addressed her post-election feelings on social media. Kamala Harris' stepdaughter also expressed her emotional exhaustion via her Substack Soft Crafts by Ella Emhoff, titled "Soft Pins," which she wrote on Friday, November 8, 2024.
She recounted what she's gone through emotionally since the election results came out, writing:
"I feel like we all need this extra this week. I know we are all feeling a lot of emotions right now. That's normal, and it would be weird if we weren't. I know I've gone through about 10 cycles of sadness, rage, and stress—and that was just this morning."
She addressed people who feel emotional like her, saying that it's important to feel whatever emotion someone is feeling, so "they don't fester inside." Ella Emhoff also shared a tip on how she overcomes feeling a surge of emotion, adding that she channels her anger and sadness into being creative.
She also quelled her followers' frustrations, saying that she will be there for them and that she plans on making her crafting community a space where they can "just relax and take our minds off things."
