What did Charli XCX say about Martha Stewart? Singer's SNL monologue explored
On Saturday, November 16, Charli XCX hosted SNL, where she brought up the example of Martha Steward to explain to her audience the meaning of "brat" - which is also the name of her sixth studio album, released in June this year.
Defining it as an "attitude" or a "vibe," the True Romance singer went on to say:
"For example, the new Martha Stewart documentary... When Martha gets made about an old magazine article and she says she's glad that the journalist who wrote is dead, that is brat."
The 32-year-old continued:
"And then last Friday, when that exact journalist responded and said, hey, I'm alive, b*tch, that is extremely brat."
The journalist being referred to in Charli XCX's monologue is Andrea Peyser. Martha's documentary, released on October 30, 2024, saw the former model calling Peyser "the New York Post lady" who wrote "horrible" things about her back in 2004, amidst Stewart's ongoing insider trading trial.
Charli XCX was both a host and a musical guest on SNL last weekend
Charli XCX - born Charlotte Emma Aitchison - made her third appearance on SNL last weekend, with the first two appearances occurring in 2014 and 2022 respectively.
However, it was the first time Charli XCX was pulling a double shift on the show, being both the host and the musical guest on it. Charli started the show with a monologue about her career's beginning, saying that she played at her first rave at the age of 15, with her parents driving her there.
Moving forward to the present, the 32-year-old said:
"Today, I consider myself to be a triple threat, which in England means I sing, I drink and I smoke."
Charli also starred in 9 sketches on the live show, in one of which she starred as her tourmate, Troye Sivan. Sivan later used a picture of her Troye version as his Instagram DP.
In another one of her sketches, Charli XCX played Andy Sandberg's wife in a musical short. In the video, the couple appeared to enjoy calling the cops on others, even for the most minor of errors.
In another sketch, Charli XCX has a "mean cute" with Please Don't Destroy's cast - Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy - where the Backseat singer calls them the all-male reboot of Hocus Pocus towards the end.
Charli's monologue about Martha Stewart stemmed from the latter's ongoing feud with Andrea Peyser
Charli XCX's definition of "brat" on SNL was influenced by Martha Stewart's comment about Andrea Peyser in her recent documentary.
Twenty years ago, Steward was called an "ill-mannered dominatrix" by Peyser in a column published soon after the businesswoman's imprisonment. The column was titled Arrogant Billionaire Played the Ultimate Fool.
Once Peyser learned about Martha Stewart declaring her dead, she responded with another column addressing the 83-year-old. The journalist talked about her "uncredited cameo appearance" in Stewart's documentary, thereby clarifying that she was still alive.
Andrea went on to pick instances from Martha's documentary to support her allegations of the model-turned-broker being "petty," "abusive," "obsessive-compulsive," and "miserly".
The journalist added about her documentary being a:
"movie about the life and crimes, hissy fits, grudges, vendettas and remorseless misbehavior of the New Jersey-born model-turned-stockbroker, then internationally celebrated purveyor of homemaker p*rn."
According to a New York Post article published on November 17, Martha commented about Andrea's recent column leading "more people" to watch her documentary after reading the headline.
Martha Stewart's documentary, which focuses on her prison time alongside the other ups and downs of her personal and professional life, has received a rating of 6.8/10 on Rotten Tomatoes.
