An overview of E. Jean Carrol and Trump's legal battles
E. Jean Carrol accused Donald Trump of allegedly s*xually assaulting her at a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in 2019. This accusation came in an article titled Hideous Men, which she wrote for New York Magazine that year. In the article, she claimed the assault allegedly occurred in late 1995 or early 1996.
Trump, the US president at the time the allegations were made public, denied ever meeting Carrol. He also accused the writer of colluding with the Democratic Party to tarnish his reputation and trying to gain financially from the claim.
That same year, E. Jean Carrol filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump. In a 2019 email statement to NPR, she said:
"Decades ago, the now President of the United States r*ped me. When I had the courage to speak out about the attack, he defamed my character, accused me of lying for personal gain, even insulted my appearance. No woman should have to face this. But this lawsuit is not only about me."
In 2022, E. Jean Carrol filed her second lawsuit against Trump for battery under the "Adult Survivors Act." According to CNN, Carrol won both lawsuits against the president-elect. He was ordered to pay her $5.3 million during the first trial and an additional $83.3 million in damages after another trial in 2024.
As per CNN, the court found Trump "liable for defamation and s*xual assault" but not r*pe during the first trial in 2023. Trump denied the claims and filed to appeal the ruling. The fate of the appeals is still pending at the time of this article.
Before the election, E. Jean Carrol posted several tweets denouncing Trump and supporting Kamala Harris, saying she was voting for the candidate "who does not assault women!"
