Zendaya makes appearance at a double feature screening in Los Angeles
On Saturday, November 17, Hollywood star Zendaya attended a double feature screening for her two big hits, Challengers and Dune: Part Two, at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles. According to IMDb, the event was organized by FYC (For Your Consideration) as part of an awards push and celebrated the actress's work in both successful ventures.
The first film in the screening, Challengers, is a sports romance directed by Luca Guadagnino. Zendaya played a rising tennis star named Tashi Duncan, who gets entangled in a love triangle with fellow tennis players Patrick Zweig and Art Donaldson.
In an interview with USA Today, the Euphoria actress shared her thoughts on the complexity of her character, Tashi Duncan, stating:
“For Tashi, there is no other thing to fall back on. Her parents can’t afford what the boys can; there’s not that luxury of just knowing you’re going to be all right either way. Also, she’s never given herself a moment to grieve the effects the injury has had on her life."
Zendaya continued:
"She immediately just sucks it up and moves on. And I think that’s an experience a lot of women feel, and a lot of Black women as well: not having the time or the space to just feel, and having to present to the world as very strong all the time.”
In Denis Villenueve's Dune: Part Two, Zendaya reprises her role as Chani from the first part. Chani is the love interest of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), the protagonist of the Dune series, which is based on Frank Herbet's best-selling sci-fi novels.
Speaking about the actress's work in the film, director Denis Villeneuve claimed her chemistry with co-star Timothée Chalamet elevated the film for him. He told Deadline:
“They met each other in Part One, briefly, and spontaneously they became friends. As we did the promotional tour, their relationship became, let’s say, a deeper meaning – they’re close friends."
He added:
"And for me, it’s a tremendous help, of course, because Jon [Spaihts, screenwriter] and I had structured the whole story on their relationship through the birth of the love between Paul and Chani, then the struggle of this love with the pressure from the outside, from the politics, and then the break."
Both films performed well at the box office. Dune: Part Two collected around $714 million worldwide, while Challengers made around $96 million globally.
