Canelo vs Golovkin rematch: Insight and predictions
What's the story?
The first fight between Canelo Alvarez (49 W, 1 L, 2D) and Gennady Golovkin (37W, 1D) , contested on September 16 last year was declared a controversial draw. As soon as the result was finalised, it quickly hit headlines and sparked debate on the internet as many boxing fans felt Golovkin did more than enough to be declared the outright winner.
Now that the rematch has been announced for May 5 (arena TBD), everyone will be eager to see how this score is settled once and for all - which of the two iconic boxers will ultimately prevail?
In case you didn't know...
Gennady Golovkin is the unified World Middleweight champion, currently holding WBA (Super), WBC, IBF and IBO belts. The only remaining belt left to attain is held by Billy Joe Saunders - the WBO middleweight title. Canelo Alvarez moved up a weight class to fight him, after much speculation in months leading to the formal announcement.
Golovkin is widely regarded as a boxing legend, one who continues to impress despite his age - while Canelo meanwhile has a reputation as one of the world's most feared boxers based on his punching power and speed.
What's next?
As May 5 gradually approaches, pre-match whispers are already beginning to show that many believe Canelo will prove too much for Golovkin.
Golovkin will turn 36 in early April and despite his legendary status, questions will be asked as to whether he can effectively get the job done this time around - especially having struggled in his attempts for a knockout during their first encounter.
Canelo managed to create some threatening moments through combinations and counter punching, despite being on the backfoot for large periods during the twelve rounds. Both boxers have very good durability and it's not surprising that there were no knockdowns - although the same cannot be said with such conviction ahead of their rematch.
Author's take
Gennady "GGG" Golovkin was, as stated, dominant during their first encounter and it'll undoubtedly give him confidence ahead of their next outing. Canelo, despite his various skills, has issues with stamina as he is unable to maintain high intensity for sustained rounds.
Previously, Golovkin was cautious to avoid being caught too regularly by Canelo's counter-punching style. As the pair know each other better now, I see no reason why he would not be more adventurous in his attempts to secure a knockout victory and leave nothing to the judges' scorecards.
Prediction: Gennady Golovkin wins by way of knockout
