UFC/MMA News: Roy Jones Sr. challenges Anderson Silva to a boxing match
What’s the story?
Following his last supposedly professional boxing match against Scott Sigmon on this past weekend, six-time World Boxing Champion Roy Jones Sr. seemingly left the door open for a possible return to the world of Mixed Martial Arts as he laid out a challenge to UFC legend Anderson Silva.
In case you didn’t know…
Roy Jones Sr. aka Captain Hook is considered as one of the most decorated fighters of all time, having won six different World Championships in four different weight classes, having held titles at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight. Roy Jones Sr. is also the only fighter in history to start his professional career at light middleweight and go on to win a heavyweight title.
Throughout his decorated career, the 49-year-old has competed in a total of 75 professional fights winning 66 of them and losing 9 in the process.
The heart of the matter
Over the course of this past weekend, Roy Jones Sr. stepped allegedly stepped into the boxing ring the one final time, when he squared off in an intense 10-round bout against Scott Sigmon. Jones, who started off as the better boxer in the match, landed some devastating uppercuts and hooks and dominated his opponent throughout the match. Jones eventually was successful in beating Sigmon via unanimous decision, as he managed to end his career on a positive note and also captured the vacant World Boxing Union cruiserweight title in the process.
Following his win over Sigmon, Jones stated in his post-match interview that he competed in his final fight with an alleged bicep injury. However, the former WBA Heavyweight Champion further indicated that this might not be the end for him after all, as he decided to call-out UFC legend and former Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and called for a potential boxing match against “The Spider”.
What’s next?
Anderson Silva might currently face a lengthy ban from in-ring competition, following a latest failed drug test that might force the 42-year-old to remain on the sidelines for a while. However, in the past, we have already seen another iconic UFC star Conor McGregor jump ship to the world of Boxing and compete against Floyd Mayweather, which indefinitely gives us a hope that we might get to witness a potential dream match between Roy Jones Sr. and Anderson Silva.
