3 reasons why AEW is the new WCW
It has been a while since Cody and team shocked the wrestling world with their long-awaited announcement about a new wrestling promotion.
They have confirmed that the new promotion, called All Elite Wrestling, would broadcast their debut show named "Double Or Nothing" at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas on May 25th, 2019. The promotion is making waves even before producing a single show, and is signing popular names right and left.
The Internet Wrestling Community is abuzz with talk of similarities between AEW and the now defunct WCW. Let's take a look at three reasons why this is a topic worth discussing.
#3 Backed by a billionaire
Wrestling fans from the 90s might remember Ted Turner, the media mogul who was the financial supporter behind WCW. His wealth helped the company invest in big names like Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall.
He was the reason Eric Bischoff got two hours of prime time TV to showcase Monday Nitro, that went on to go toe to toe with Monday Night Raw.
AEW is reportedly backed by a billionaire too! The promotion is being backed by an entrepreneur named Shahid Khan and his son, Tony. What this means is AEW has all the necessary tools to bring in some of the biggest names in wrestling and build a roster that would give the WWE a run for their money.
#2 A modern Monday Night War on the horizon
With the kind of financial backing this company has, they wouldn't face many issues with getting a slot for their premiere show on Monday nights and go head to head with WWE's Monday Night Raw.
AEW's goal, no matter what they say publicly, is to become an alternative to WWE. With the amount of top talent they have been signing, it's no secret what their intentions are.
This is hauntingly similar to what we used to see back in the late 90s. The Monday Night Wars resulted in some of the most intriguing programming in the history of pro wrestling. Both companies were on their toes all the time, in an effort to not fall back and lose their business to the competition.
This is what will happen again.
