What's the story?

Canadian sports network, TSN announced on Tuesday, 22 January, that they will be airing a one hour documentary on Canadian pro-wrestler Kenny Omega.

In case you didn't know...

In 2012, to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Football League's 100th Grey Cup (Canadian version of Super Bowl). 8 filmmakers made hour long films showcasing the CFL's impact on Canadian Heritage.

The series was very successful, being recognized and awarded a variety of film and television awards. Building on that success, TSN announced they will be releasing 6 new episodes starting Feb 6, 2019. One of these episodes will focus Canadian born pro-wrestler Kenny Omega.

The heart of the matter

The documentary on Kenny Omega is called "Omega Man: A Wrestling Love Story" and was filmed over the past several months focusing on the central theme of Omega, who is originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is one of the biggest worldwide starts of pro wrestling, but still largely unknown in his native country. Chris Jericho, wrestling reporter Dave Meltzer and others make appearances in the documentary.

The press release from TSN goes on to state that the documentary will show how Omega brought beauty, intimacy and gay-friendly messages to the macho world of wrestling.

The hour-long documentary will debut on Wednesday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time.

Could the timing of this documentary reveal anything about Kenny Omega's future? The Kenny Omega documentary airing on TSN may not only be surprising to Canadian wrestling fans, but may also indicate that Kenny Omega will not be signing with the WWE. Could this also indicate that All Elite Wrestling may have a TV deal with TSN in Canada, which would position them right up against the WWE on a rival network?

At the same time, the documentary could be perfectly timed for Omega's debut in the WWE. As pointed out in the press release, Omega is one of the biggest names in the wrestling world, but hardly known in Canada. Could the airing of this documentary be timed with his debut in WWE to help introduce him to Canadian wrestling fans? Time will tell.
