41st K C Mahindra All India Invitation Schools’ Regatta 2013 culminates with a grand celebration

Kolkata, 16th June, 2013: 41st K C Mahindra All India Invitation School’s Regatta 2013 organised by The Lake Club in association with the Mahindra Group concluded today. The weeklong national championship celebrated its grand finale with a fabulous closing ceremony. 350 young rowers from 67 schools with entries from Tamil Nadu, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andaman and Nicobar, apart from host state, West Bengal took part in this challenge. Total 8 schools emerged victorious in the eight categories across Junior and Senior Girls, and Junior and Senior Boys in the sections of Single Scull and Coxed Fours. The winners were felicitated by the Chief Guest, His Excellency Shri. M.K. Narayanan, Governor of West Bengal.

o Junior Boys – KV Assam

o Junior Girls- South Point High School

o Senior Girls- National High School for Girls

·         Coxed Fours:

o Junior Boys- La Martinere ‘A’

o Senior Boys- KVN Naik College, Nashik

o Junior Girls- GD Birla

o Senior Girls- Govt. Girls School Andaman

·         Overall Winners:

o Boys – Govt. Boys School Andaman

o Girls -  Govt. Girls School Andaman

 

The winner in the Junior Girls Single Scull is South Point High School; Junior Boys Single Scull is KV Assam; Senior Girls Single Scull is National High School for Girls; Senior Boys Single Scull is Govt. Boys School, Andaman. In the category of Coxed Fours, the winner in Junior Girls is GD Birla; in Junior Boys is La Martinere ‘A’; in Senior Girls – the winner is Govt. Girls School Andaman; and in Senior Boys the winner is KVN Naik College, Nashik. Govt. Boys School Andaman and Govt. Girls School Andaman were declared as the overall winners of the championship. The two trophies for best disciplined school teams, in both the Girls’ and Boys’ categories, were won by DPS Nazira, Assam and National High School respectively.

The occasion was also graced by Brig. K.P. Singh Deo, AVSM, TDC, (Retd.), President (Emeritus) – Rowing Federation of India; Mr. SP Shukla, President – Group Strategy – Defence Sector & Chief Brand Officer, Mahindra Group, Mr. Zhooben Bhiwandiwala,Executive Vice President & Managing Partner, Mahindra Partners Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.  and Shri. Chandan Roy Chowdhury, President, West Bengal Rowing Association and Hon. Secretary, Calcutta Rowing Club. Also present on the occasion were Dr. S L Sarkar, President, The Lake Club; Mr. Debabrata Datta and Mr. Subrata Guha, Joint Honorary Secretary, The Lake Club;Mr. Ashok Mehta, President of the Jury, School Regatta; Mr. Kalyan Sarangi, Convenor, School Regattaand Mr. Sudip Naha,Captain of Boats, The Lake Club. Introduced in 1973, the event has gained national recognition by the Rowing Federation of India and is one of the oldest and the largest rowing events in Asia, with the widest participant base of rowers. The Lake Club, one of the premiere rowing clubs in India, aims to promote rowing as a sport among school going children, making it accessible and interesting for all across different sections of society. And to that effect, the club has played a consistent role by providing training and infrastructure, equipment and facilities with just a token fee of Re.1/- only per student per month.Commenting on the initiative, Dr. S L Sarkar, President, The Lake Club said, “As we conclude yet another successful year of All India Invitation Schools’ Regatta, I wish to thank all our young participants and the organising team who have worked relentlessly 24×7 to make it a success. A special thanks to the Mahindra Group for partnering with us and encouraging us to make this event a memorable one. The zeal of the young students motivates us in hosting the event with added grandeur every year. I am sure that all of us at the Club and also the participants across the country are eagerly awaiting the 42nd Regatta when we will again hit the lake with our oars.”Honouring Mr. K C Mahindra, one of the founders of the Mahindra Group, who was also the first Captain of Boats, Lake Club (1930-1935) and President of the Lake Club (1939-1940), the Mahindra Group has entered into a five year partnership supporting the All India Invitation School’s Regatta. Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Keshub Mahindra, Chairman Emeritus, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. shared, “Sport, like business, can be a great leveller where success is determined by, among other things, hard work, commitment and a passion to the cause. My father, Mr. K. C. Mahindra was extremely passionate about rowing, a sport he learned during his years as a student at Cambridge, UK. The sportsman spirit that he imbibed extended to his business activities as well. As a tribute to one of its founders, the Mahindra Group is proud to be associated with the All India Invitation Schools’ Regatta organized by the Lake Club.”
