5 times Olympic gold medalist, Sir Steve Redgrave launches a coaching clinic at Lavasa

Lavasa, November 12, 2013: Lavasa, India’s first planned hill city, in keeping with its ethos of ‘Live Life in Full’ and as part of its endeavor to promote the destination as an education and entertainment hub, today announced the start of The Steve Redgrave Rowing Academy. The academy has been set up in association with Britain’s greatest Olympian and a global sporting icon, Sir Steve Redgrave.

Sir Steve Redgrave started the first coaching clinic at the Dasve Lake by imparting technique drills and several training “pieces” in sculls to build speed and endurance to over 70 rowers from armed forces and professional affiliated with rowing clubs in Pune.

The coaching clinic is the first in series of activities being planned as a build up to the opening of a full-fledged training facility at Gadle, close to the Dasve town. Through the year, Sir Steve and his team of trainers will conduct a series of training programs for professional and amateur rowers to develop their skills and enhance their competitive capabilities.

Sir Steve Redgrave and his team will look into the key areas of organization, planning, building and development of the academy structure. The academy will train students not just on the technical aspects of rowing but also mentor them in areas like regatta preparation, mental and physical conditioning in order to breed well rounded athletes. The Steve Redgrave Rowing Academy plans to capitalize on the growing popularity of the sport globally and in India.

Sir Steve Redgrave also oversaw the next phase of development of The Steve Redgrave Rowing Academy coming up in Lavasa. The academy is scheduled to be completed soon.

Lavasa is a wonderful location for this Academy with a spectacular natural setting. I hope to inspire future generations of India rowers which in turn will help the sport of rowing to develop in this beautiful country. ”

Planned for a permanent population of around 3 lakh residents and a tourist inflow estimated at 20 lakh per annum, Lavasa is envisioned to be a more liveable city of the future where residents can live, work, learn and play in harmony with nature. Lavasa has already tied up with golfing great Sir Nick Faldo to launch a golf academy and a golf course; Hockey Australia for hockey and with other partners for Badminton, Squash and Football academies.

About Sir Steve Redgrave

Endurance and Perseverance have been the hallmarks of Sir Steve Redgrave’s impressive career as an athlete. Sir Steve is one of only 5 athletes in history to have won gold medals in 5 consecutive Olympic Games and the only one to have ever achieved the feat in an endurance event. He is an outstanding nine-time World Champion having won Gold at the Worlds in 1986, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998 and 1999. In light of his sporting greatness, Sir Steve was awarded a Knighthood in 2001.
