Fenninger wins Super-G to deny Hoefl-Riesch

Austria’s Anna Fenninger picked up her second World Cup win of the season in Sunday’s Super-G to deny Maria Hoefl-Riesch a win on her home course.

The 23-year-old, who won the world super combined title on the Khandahar course here in 2011, clocked 1min 20.43sec with Germany’s Hoefl-Riesch second at 0.20sec back with Julia Mancuso of the United States third at 0.23sec.

It was Fenninger’s second win of the season having won the giant slalom in Semmering, Austria, in December.

“I deserved it, I was ready for this win and I believed in myself,” said Fenninger.

“I made a few mistakes on the top part and really risked everything on the bottom section, but everything came together. It feels good.”

Overall World Cup winner Tina Maze, who won Saturday’s downhill here, finished fourth at 0.43sec back to add to her record tally of 2074 points having eclipsed Hermann Maier’s previous mark of 2000 set in the 1999-2000 season.

Hoefl-Riesch was denied a 25th win of her career in front of her home crowd having finished third in Saturday’s downhill.

Having won last year’s Super-G race here, Mancuso, whose boyfriend Aksel Lund Svindal clinched the men’s World Cup super-G title Sunday with his fifth victory of the season in Kvitfjell, Norway, was denied a golden day for the couple.

On Saturday, Maze became only the third woman to win a World Cup race in all five skiing disciplines in a single season after her downhill victory, matching Austria’s Petra Kronberger (1990-91) and Croatia’s Janica Kostelic (2005-6).
