Sportskeeda Tennis Awards 2014: Comeback Players of the Year - Male

It has been an incredible year on the ATP tour this year. We saw two new Grand Slam champions being crowned at the Australian Open and the U.S Open. The Big four of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray did play their part, but several young players showed they were ready to win matches on the big stage. It wasn’t an easy choice to pick the comeback player of the year. There were a lot of contenders, but we took into consideration the improvements they made over the past one year and their performances on the tour. Here’s my pick of the Top 5:

#5 Pablo Cuevas

Pablo Cuevas was ranked 220 in the world at the end of 2013. He registered impressive results this year. He beat Jeremy Chardy, Fernando Verdasco and Joao Souza to clinch his first ATP 250 tournament at the Swedish Open. This win catapulted him to No. 61 in the rankings.

He went on to win the Croatian Open in Umag after qualifying for the main draw of the tournament with wins over Nikolas Walterscheid-Tukic, Nicola Cacic and Renzo Olivo. In the main tournament, he beat Mate Delic, Andreas Seppi, Teymuraz Gabashvili, Fabio Fognini and Tommy Robredo to claim his second ATP 250 event in two weeks. He was ranked inside the Top 40 for the first time in his career with this win.

He is currently ranked No. 30 in the world.
