#1 Man of the Tournament in Under-19 World Cup 2000
His first big performance came in the year 2000 when India won the Under-19 Cricket World Cup played in Sri Lanka under the captaincy on Mohammad Kaif. He was adjudged the man of the tournament for his all-round performances. He played a crucial knock of 58 runs off just 25 balls against Australia in the semi-final. In the group stage he outclassed New Zealand scoring 68 with the bat and picking up 36/4 with the bowl.
Such performances earned him a selection in the national squad when he was called up to play in the ICC Knockout Trophy in the year 2000. And immediately he showed his true colours as he won the Man of the Match award in just the second match against Australia in the quarter-final. His innings of 84 runs off 80 balls enabled India qualify for the semi-final removing the heavyweights Australia out of the tournament.
