Which teams have the best conversion rate in the Premier League this season?
The 24th Premier League season has thrown up a number of surprises this season, most notably the rise of Leicester City. Claudio Ranieri took over last summer and the club has not looked back. After barely escaping relegation last season, they now sit atop the EPL table after 28 rounds. But their lead at the top has been threatened time and again by the two north London clubs – Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal – and Manchester City. In a league where goal difference plays a huge factor, it might simply come down to that with only seven points separating the top four clubs – provided Manchester City win their game in hand. With that in mind, which clubs have had the best conversion rate this season? Stats courtesy of TransferMarkt
#5 West Bromwich Albion - 15.7%
It’s hard to believe that West Bromwich Albion are in fifth place on the list ahead of the likes of most of the top 10 sides. The Baggies have scored only 29 goals in 28 matches – a ratio of just over 1 goal a game. They are currently placed 13th in the table.
The 29 goals they have scored is also one of the worst in the league. Only strugglers Swansea City (27), Newcastle United (27) and Aston Villa (22) have scored lesser goals. This makes it even more remarkable that they manage to convert chances that fall to them.
The club’s top goalscorer this season is Jose Salomon Rondon who has scored six goals – a paltry amount compared to the Premier League’s top scorers who are nearing 20 goals this season. Saido Berahino, who has come on as s substitute more times than he has started, has scored only four goals.
Tony Pulis is not one to come up with organized attacking tactics and relies more on physicality and long balls rather than playing the ball on the ground. Crosses and aerial duels are West Brom’s bread and butter with the odd set-piece goal from direct free-kicks (remember Craig Gardner’s equaliser against Leicester City?).
