We start off with the not-so-romantic-but-genuine reason. Chelsea have a lot of money, even though they can’t spend it as freely as before because of the Financial Fair Play rules now.

During his time as Chelsea’s manager, Jose Mourinho has spent around 400 million pounds on new players – that’s 80 million pounds worth of spending each season.
