Records broken by AB de Villiers and South Africa against the West Indies in 2nd ODI
AB de Villiers slammed 149 in just 44 balls in the 2nd ODI against West Indies at the Wanderers, Johannesburg on Sunday. During the knock, he broke the record for the fastest ODI century and the record for the fastest ODI half-century. Coming in to bat at 247/1, de Villiers took the attack to the West Indies from the word go and demolished everything that came before him. Here are some of the records that de Villiers and his team broke:
#1 Fastest ODI century
AB de Villiers broke the record for the fastest ODI century ever, by getting to his ton in just 31 deliveries. In the process, he bettered Corey Anderson’s record, who had taken 36 balls to get to triple digits.
Anderson had achieved the feat during his knock of 131* (51) at the Queenstown Events Centre on New Year’s Day last year. Interestingly, the New Zealand batsman had also achieved the same record against the West Indies.
One record de Villiers couldn’t break today, though, was the fastest century in a competitive match. He fell just one short of Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate Chris Gayle’s record – the West Indian had reached his century in 30 deliveries in an IPL match against the Pune Warriors India in 2013.
